Mixing in Logic using hardware eqs/comps

Recommended Posts

I record in Logic Pro using a Mackie Onyx as the interface (the 16 in 2 out) version I want to be able to deploy my Neve and Calrec eqs and comps during mixdown can anyone recommend an alternative interface that will allow me to do this.

Thanks nrbq

I ran into the same problem when I recently got an API Lunchbox. Thought I'd be able to limp along with my old Mackie Onyx 1220 for a while, then realized there's really no way to patch the API in and out as the Mackie only has the 2 out via firewire. So, I got a Duet 2. Others will recommend an RME Babyface and MOTU has a new unit out, too... Track16, I think is what it's called.

Any of those should work, just depends on your i/o needs.

Thanks that's really useful. I looked at the devices. What I am looking for is a device that allows me to insert the Neve and Calrec modules into the signal chain while mixing and/or re re-record the results back into Logic a bit like having a console with inserts. You can probably tell that I am an 'old school' engineer. I record a lot of live drums and it is really handy to be able to effect them retrospectively with the hardware devices which seem to have much more pleasing effects than the plugins I have. Mackie have released a new Onyx that is 16 in/out and I was just wondering what other people were doing in this situation. Thanks again for your help, please reply if you have other suggestions. nrbq

Yeah, the Mackie 1640i would do it: 16 in, 16 out. If you're doing lot's of live drums, I think that would be a great solution. I never had any problems with my 1220, loved it.

Seems like I've seen David post about some of his clients having problems, but I'm not sure which model it was/if it has all been worked or not. Maybe he'll chime in on this thread with some other ideas for you...

Thanks I have looked at the Allen and Heath mixer and it does look similar but the Mackie is, a you say, a reliable thing and you get a 4 year warranty so I'll start saving!

I remember a client having problem with one of those Mackies, can't remember the exact model, but that was at least 4 years ago so it wasn't one of the newer model. Still, I'm not a big fan of those Mackie boards, in fact I'm not a fan of using a board with Logic unless you actually need one, I think it's generally better to simply use an audio interface with as many i/o as needed.

nrbq, do you know how many i/o you need? As in...how many simultaneous external analog processors you want to use, plus how many more available connections you need for your other gear (guitars, keyboards etc...)? That's the first thing you should define. That and a budget would allow us to customize our recommendations for you.

Thanks for that. I have 4 Calrec EQs and Comps 4 Neve eqs and Comps 2 UA LA610 and some other odds and sods. I might be about to get more. I have used the Mackie for 3 years (the old model) its been fine but has its limitations. So I guess the answers to your questions are. At least 16 in and outs. The budget is around 2k sterling.

Thanks again for your help.

Best wishes nrbq
