michael2
hi all. I had a question about using other synths (Logics or otherwise) for the purpose of vocoding (is that a word?). I was thinking that one could potentially get some interesting sounds that way, but not sure how I would set it up. any ideas?
westremote
Long answer yes, short answer no. In simple terms, a vocoder takes a sound target (such as a wave created by a synth) and overlays the sonic characteristics of another sound source over it. So if you overlay speech onto a synth, it kind of sounds like the synth is talking. You could hypothetically bus the signal of a synth to a whole bunch of different channels, put very narrow band pass filters on each channel, then side-chain gate each channel to an audio file or other bus. Assuming you enjoy wasting your time and have a ton of processing power that would work.... this is why the long answer is technically yes. THE BETTER OPTION: Go to http://www.kvraudio.com/q.php and search for a vocoder that will allow you to import waveforms. Then create another wave you like, bounce it, and import it into the vocoder. There may also be a plug-in effect (as opposed to a plug-in instrument) which would could put on a synth and side-chain to your desired audio track, which would let you modify your target synth in real time. michael2
that's what I thought. I just spent a bunch of time trying to do it with ES2 and all I was able to get was a sidechained synth. I was looking at NI Reaktor and apparently you could do this with that synth. hmmm, should have bought it when it was on sale last week. thanks for the idea of the waveform import; not exactly sure how that would work, but researching it will give me something to do for a little while

Rev. Juda Sleaze
Here's a simple pic of the track oscillator if you don't want to watch a video: https://logicprohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=401461#p401461
michael2
Are you talking about doing this?: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=81225 thanks. I only had a chance to watch about the first 3rd of the video; it was sidechaining stuff at that point. I'll finish watching after the kids are fully asleep. what I'm really hoping for is to actually be able to vocode but with wilder sounds. now i'm wondering if I can do this with TAL-vocoder. it lets you use whatever synth, but not sure how much of the original synth sound comes through. it's more old school (everything goes to a bus with 2 channels coming in hard panned). thanks again. Rev. Juda Sleaze
Use the Evoc Track Oscillator insert, not the Evoc instrument. You can use it with ANY software instrument. Just route everything as I show in the picture I linked to. Don't forget that the default Evoc insert starts with less than the maximum bands, so ramp them up if you want more clarity, play with the blend and stereo mode too. Here's a picture of a quick setup using Apple Loops to create a gated pad effect. I've included the loop, which anyone can use for whatever purpose they like : VokeGateSleazeLoop.aif.zip
