Thomas91
I have never owned a MIDI controller but I am keen to buy the Novation Nocturn. For some of the third party plugs, the mouse skips values when adjusting controls that use high values, even when holding shift. Does a MIDI controller allow for finer tuning or is it the same as the mouse?
David Nahmani
AFAIK the only controls that can have better resolution with a controller (vs a mouse) is volume.
Thomas91
Thank you David. I wonder why that may be. Up to now I have been relying on the control view for plugs because that allows me to type the parameters. If one of the parameters uses higher values or decimal numbers (this is how Logic scales the values) then I can type some number to 3 or 4 DPs to get the value that I want. Is there a way to configure plugs so that they always open in control view or is there a key command to toggle between the two views?
fader8
Thomas, There are some plugins that accept 14bit midi messages. ES2 for example. What specifically are you trying to control? As for the Nocturn, if it's got rotary encoders, like my RemoteSL, then they can likely be programmed to output 14 bit.
Eric Cardenas
I believe that the Channel EQ also supports 10-bit for the frequency setting of a band. Not in front of logic at the moment so I can not check.
involver
A lot of plugins allow you to hold down shift while moving a knob for finer control with the mouse. Also, a lot of plugins let you double click a value or knob to type the value.
lostmemories
I don't know if this is possible with the Nocturn, but I'm using a Remote SL Compact, and you can use relative increment or relative decrement format instead of sending fixed values between a min and max number. In this case, you are not limited by the low resolution of Midi but by the full resolution of the plug-ins. And more, when you turn the controller pot, it increment or decrement from the current value. You just have to set the controller in REL1, REL2 or APOT mode, and when you use the controller learning function in Logic, it will automatically detect that you are using increment or decrement values format! Lots of controllers can use this format, but the Nocturn is a bit special and I believe it works only with automap and you can not program yourself the Midi controls, in this case, you have to use automap that will work in the incremental, decremental format without Midi limitation resolution. Thomas91
Thank you for the help. I have just downloaded the Automap manual. It shows that I can change the maximum, minimum and step settings for plug-in parameters. Excellent! I am not sure but I reckon that Automap automatically assigns the maximum value to correspond to the maximum value of the parameter. If not then one can change this manually.
