Censorship

Recommended Posts

Blended drinks are for girls or sissies. Single malt Scotch Whiskey, baby!

Agreed. And no ice, either.

Why does this "censorship" thing come up repeatedly on every damn Internet forum?

My guess is that people lose sight of the purpose of the forum. This one is dedicated to disseminating information about and solving problems with Apple's Logic Pro DAW. It's not here so you can "express yourself," hone your self-absorbed stand-up routine or reassure yourself that you're smarter than other people by pouncing on noobs.

For my money, most Internet forums could use a bit more pruning, which is all it is and not "censorship" of any kind. As David suggested earlier, if you want an unmoderated Utopia where everyone's ideas are given free reign you can start your own forum for a very small investment. And there's always Harmony Central.

The section you have just posted in is here for 'anything else."

Just out of curiosity, did you take your Logic keyboard back - or check to see if a different 'Key Command preset' preference worked?

Ok, this thread has officially degressed. Thanks Jim (sigh)

Did it start off good?

Damn, I must've missed that!

Well Ski, looks like your recipe for the "Mixed Blessing" stands.

Quite an expensive ingredient list, not sure if I'll be making one soon, there's gold in them thar cocktails!

...and Klopfgeist really does sound like a shooter...

Here's one that's a variation on the beer cocktail. Shandys are suposedly quite refreshing but I've never tried one yet (sweet beer?? Yech!) so I can't vouch for this recipe. But in the spirit  of this thread, (and buoyed by a firm desire to keep this thread on topic  ) here's the Wahine Censor.....

Wahine Censor

5oz Negra Modelo (substitute smooth wheat beer)

5oz ginger ale/beer

1.5oz gin

.75oz lime juice

.25oz grenadine

1 dash orange bitters

Build over the tallest glass you have, filled with ice. Float Cherry Heering. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry speared through a spent lime shell.

@ Carlos & Rev, you're soooooo on to something here with Logic-based drinks.

Here's one...not really a mixed drink, but a rapid fire barrage:

(WARNING!!! HAVE SOMEONE HIDE YOUR CAR KEYS BEFORE TRYING THIS)

The Environment

- 1 shot of tequila/salt/lemon

- another shot of tequila/salt/lemon

- drop a shot of 151 into a tall beer of your choice and chug

(The whole process should take about 15 to 20 seconds)

Repeat until the Environment starts to really make sense!

basicly i know that my english is not that good and i agree that censorship sucks, when it comes to basic human rights, but it makes no sense arguing about compressors in an offensive way

Cocktail: German Beer, half filled with Sauerkraut

btw. Klopfgeist:

When I started LogicProHelp.com a few years ago, I was dead set against censorship. It used to drive me mad when I saw some forum where I couldn't use the "F" or the "S" words without having the words be censored.

Nowadays I'm censoring this forum and and have an automatic censorship filter for S and F words which are no longer allowed here.

What happened?

The community grew. That's what happened. What was easily manageable with a few hundred members is impossible with 50,000. Everybody has their own definition of what's respectful and what's not - but there are codes we live by in a society, and everybody can at least agree that the F and S words are impolite. We also have to keep an image for our clients and prospective clients. Just last week I had parents bringing me their 12 and 13 year old kids to teach them Logic. If they came to this forum and it was full of S and F words, maybe they'd think twice about giving me their business.

There's also Google: Google actually ranks websites lower if it sees a bunch of words that makes it think it's not a serious site, or for example it could be a warez or porn site. The F and S words don't help in that department.

So in conclusion, F and S words can hurt my business, and don't bring anything constructive. They're just not needed.

As for other forms of censorship, there's also the matter of keeping threads on topic, in the correct forum, constructive, to the point, etc. When a thread about compressor settings evolves into a fight, offensive remarks are made, and everybody starts requesting or suggesting that the forum be changed - that's no longer on point, no longer constructive, and no longer of interest to the community at large. And my only interest here is to keep this forum a quality resource for the entire Logic community - that includes non-members who are googling around and end up reading a thread here on LPH: if they're going to end up on a thread that makes them think nothing constructive around Logic and/or music production is going on here at LPH, then I don't want that thread here on LPH.

Also keep in mind that the very reason you like this place, you've spent time here and continue participating and or reading this forum is partly due to our continue organization, thread renaming (you don't know how many threads are posted with titles such as "Question here please?" - which is useless for people browsing a list of titles, and useless to index by our search function or by search engines), thread splitting, moving, and, yes, sorry for the dirty word, censoring what's going too far and is no longer being constructive.

On one hand I am open to suggestions and discussing how we could run the forum and what could be improved, on the other hand many of the suggestions often remind me of the "advice" I'm often getting about raising kids by people who've never raised kids. I, too, had different ideas before I started creating a forum. But try and create your own forum, and you'll see, it's not as simple as you may have originally thought to please everyone and keep a quality place run by a community focused on a common interest, and you may have to revisit some of the ideas you felt so strongly about before you created it.

To paraphrase the great Stephen Fry, 'Swearing isn't necessary, but nor are pillows or curtains. However they are something, that make the world a more colourful and interesting place....' If a man with his intellect and vocabulary think swearing is ok, then it's definitely ok with me!

Having said that...... Fair call David. Some of what you've said here is an eye opener actually, like google ranking.

Censorship

I am against it on any level. It's a slippery slope.

What do you guys think?

There is moderation in all forums of discussion, wether it be from someones fist or boot or the rules of parliament. There is no absolute free expression, there are consequences to 'wrong idea' or 'improper thought' expressed at the wrong place or the wrong time. A younger person can tolerate a lot more garbage than i ever could, i've found as i've aged i like the filter of moderation so that i can enjoy the peace and quiet of a greater degree of tempered rationalism, IOW the less time one has on the planet the less time they have for garbage. Your slippery slope suggestion is a fallacy.

Sincerely Tshh

Moderation -- not Censorship.

Back in the day, i used to be one of a handful of moderators on a very popular automobile forum. We used to have certain users cry foul, over censorship, or over-moderation from time to time. The guy who ran the site made the rules abundantly clear and even had a separate page created explaining the rules, etc. As I recall - it was primarily because it was an automobile forum, and there was a strong desire for it to remain family-friendly. There were many other reasons… non-the-least, that we had advertisers.

Anyway - after a few years, a small group of the censorship cryers, created their own forum - with no rules, and no 'censorship'. They barraged our forum with links to their site and specifically looked for instances where there might have been moderation -- directing folks to their site. Their site failed miserably. Why? Because in their (misguided) attempt to create a non-censored open forum -- they drove off anyone who wasn't mentally 13 years old. Arguments were common as was name-calling, links to inappropriate content, etc.. They insulted anyone and everyone, male, female, young, old, you get the idea.

While the un-censored site died... the original forum continues to thrive, and be a great resource today.

Moral of the story, is the world has moderation of varying levels, and for various reasons. I think David has struck an excellent balance of how things are moderated here. And this, through the eyes of someone who spent three years walking the fine line. Be thankful.

Nice job David and Mods..

Aw man,

I just had the misfortune to be dragged into using another (non-music related) forum because of my work.

I never knew I had it so good here!

The simple layout, the reasonable, intelligent, friendly and fair admin & mods. Site rules that apply to the mods as well as the members without any hint of double-standards. The lack of school-yard bully mentality and "duuurrr, check me out guys, duuuuurrr, I totally ripped this newb a new one... duuuuurrrrrr...".

I've had a week of hell, and it's good to be back.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think in many ways it is our moderation and balance that protect us from real oppression and repression ...

It is a deep subject. A proportional response .... ?

I don't see this discussion friendly forum living in that context.

And it is David's house. I can't help but think, "French Cooking" ---- "refridgerator" ---- mmmm.

:)
