drhoust
Hi guys Ok so quick irritating little thing... for chopping up regions, I usually use the marquee tool and click on the recently marquee'd area and it cuts it, or alternatively I just highlight the section and then hit b - my short key for doing just that. In this project I'm working on, neither of those above options seem to work? any idea why? it only seems to work if I double click the marquee tool and slices at that point... hope I'm making sense and or not just doing something silly.. dave

David Nahmani
Selecting a portion of a region with the marquee and SINGLE-clicking it with the Pointer tool should always work. Just make sure you're using the Pointer tool?
drhoust
The key I have assigned to Split Regions/events by Locators is b, usually that always works, but yesterday when i was trying it, i would highlight an area, hit b and it would just clear that marquee selection and not split it there... the weird thing is that it always works well, but yesterday for some reason it just would not work... Let me re-evaluate this now with a slightly clearer head today..
camillo jr
BTW, if you just want to copy that section and leave the original in place, all you need to do is Marquee section, hit copy and then paste it somewhere. You don't actually have to separate the area you want to copy, with either audio or midi regions although with midi you'll have to go through the "keep-shorten-split" dialogue. For certain things, like finding a better played guitar chord in another part of the song to paste into the muffed part, this is a very fast workflow, in conjunction with the Goto command. David Nahmani
You don't actually have to separate the area you want to copy, with either audio or midi regions Yup, same thing with Option-dragging a marquee selection: done right (meaning if you let go of the Option key after you've let go of the mouse-drag) it will leave your original region unedited. camillo jr
Option-drag was the way I used to do it all the time until I realized that simply copying the Marqueed area was faster. Wish I'd figured that out much sooner! I still use Option-drag but for certain things it's not necessary.
David Nahmani
Option-drag is copying.... just another way of copying. I see a LOT of people copy and paste (Command-C/Command-V) but personally I always found it much easier to simply Option-drag (a single operation, and no need to mess about with the playhead). But to each their own!
camillo jr
Agreed! And I guess it depends on what you want to accomplish. I use Option-drag all the time with short regions that are going to sit right next to the original or at least not far from it - very convenient. However, if I'm going to be doing some copy and paste surgery on a track where the destination might be 20 or 30 bars down the line, I'll have the dragging set to "no overlap" so that when I paste in, it doesn't just sit on top of the region. So that means that if I Option-drag to separate the area I want to paste elsewhere, it will replace the area I drag it over to, which I don't want. To get around that, I must drag it over to an adjacent empty track to temporarily park it on before cutting the region or if there's none available, then I have to create a subtrack to drag it to. All of that was my former workflow for moving audio around when doing track surgery. And then one day I thought, "can't I just copy and paste a Marqeed area?" Hallelujah! David Nahmani
I see what you mean. In most situations I would simply zoom out and Option-drag the 20 or 30 bars (I've done more!), but I completely agree that it may not be practical in all situations. Also if you wanted to paste a few repeats one after the other, then Command-C/Command-V would be the way to go.
