LP 9 & Akai MPK mini - issue

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the board and indeed logic. I have a small writing set up with logic 9 and the akai mpk mini (and loving it).

My issue:

I'm trying to simultaneously program the drum pads to trigger beats and the keys to trigger a synth. I've checked around the other posts about the hardware on the forum and haven't had any luck. I'm pretty perplexed by the mpk mini editor and the manual is as much use as a chocolate teapot so if anyone could point me in the right direction, that'd be amazing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Danny

I'm trying to simultaneously program the drum pads to trigger beats and the keys to trigger a synth.

Assuming you want to use the pads for one instrument and the keys for another, you should set the pads to output in a MIDI channel different to the one used by the keys. So for example: Keys: MIDI channel 1, Pads: MIDI channel 2. (Check the MPK's quick start guide to learn how to change the MIDI channel used by pads/keys).

After you've set up the MIDI channels for the pads and keys, follow the steps on this guide:

Control Multiple Instruments on Different MIDI Channels

Hey J,

Thanks for the reply.

I followed your instructions a few times but it's simply playing both instruments at the same time.

Is this perhaps a flaw in the mpk editing software or have I made a silly mistake somewhere?

Thanks again,

Danny

First thing to verify is that you've managed to get the pads and keys to send their messages in different MIDI channels. You can confirm this by looking at Logic's MIDI Activity Display in the transport bar.

For example, this message uses MIDI channel 1:
