jonnypike
I'm up to 'Song Name' (crashed) (crashed) (crashed) (crashed) (crashed)... Basically, every time I try and cut the audio it crashes and creates a nile file with another '(crashed)' on the end... Does anyone know what might be causing it? Thanks for your help. triplets
Project could be corrupt. Not enough space on the HD. Too many undo steps. 3rd party plugin. 32-bit bridge if you're running Logic in 64-bit. Where are you saving the project to?
n6smith
Also, what version of Logic Pro? (Can you add it to your sig as that will help in the future...)

David Nahmani
How much space left available on that external hard drive? What type of drive is it: 5,400 rpm? 7,200 rpm? How is it connected: FW800? USB 2.0? eSATA?
jonnypike
Hi David. The hardrive is a LaCie Rikiki 500 GB. USB 2.0. There is 323 GB capacity left. Think the rpm is 5,4000. Interface Transfer Rate : Up to 480Mbits/s (60MB/s) Thanks again
triplets
Never use USB 2.0 for projects, it's too slow for constant streaming. Add to the fact that the drive is 5400 rpm you have a recipe for disaster. Get a firewire 800 drive from www.macsales.com and choose one that is 7200 rpm. Use that usb drive for backup purposes only. n6smith
+1 on the comments regarding a USB 2.0 and 5400 rpm drive... Good for backups.. but not good for streaming audio... Just too slow. Switching to a FW800 7200 drive will normally demonstrate a large jump in performance.. and running Logic in 64bit mode will provide Logic with full access to your extra memory.. which again, helps with performance... if you are using memory hungry plugins such as EXS or Kontakt.. However, these 'suggestions' may not be the cause of or alleviate such crashes... It's possible but not always... It could be a 'bad' plugin' (out of date or incompatible with Lion...) so make sure you are running the latest versions... and FWIW, I'd probably update Logic to 9.1.7 given you are already running Lion... which might improve matters. Finally, you may simply have a corrupt project if this is the only project to give you such issues.. so you might want to create a new project and import each track from the old project into this one and see if anything fixes it or if you can identify which track/plugin is causing the problem.. Import each track, play song and see what happens before importing next track... Long process but useful when troubleshooting...

jonnypike
Hi, quick one... do you have any recommendations for a good reliable FW800 7200 drive? Many thanks.
snorkybingo
Sounds like a glitch in the project. I've had this happen to me and the only way out of it is to start transferring all your data (copy and paste midi/ importing audio) into a new project. Save each of your mixer channels settings first so that you can easily open them in the newly created project. Rename the original project directory (put a big X at the end) so you can save your new project into a directory with the same name as the original. There's a bit of work involved but much easier than battling with a project that's constantly crashing.
n6smith
Hi, quick one... do you have any recommendations for a good reliable FW800 7200 drive? Many thanks. I use Glyph drives here... Pricey but well built, nicely cooled, very fast.. and comes with an excellent guarantee &data recovery warranty should/if/when a HD fails.. as they all do eventually! A typical 1TB one can be found here for about $189 but there are many more in the range.. Google Glyph hard drives for more info..
