Recording Bass DI and Amp simultaneously with M-audio 2626

Recommended Posts

I'd like to record Bass direct amp and Mic the amp at the same time if possible.

I have the bass line connected to the front of my m-audio 2626 which provides a preamp. Then, using logic, I have the out put of that file to output on the back of the m-audio which runs to the Amplifer.

The issue:

Using the preamp colors the tone of the amplifer in an undesirable way.

If I don't use a preamp the signal of the Direct In recording is very low /weak and doesnt make for the greatest recording.

Any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Thank you for your reply David!

Since I posted this question, I found that a direct in box might be the solution ( such as this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Live-Wire-Solutions-PDI-Double-Shielded-Heavy-Duty-Passive-Direct-Box-103686903-i1372939.gc)

The chain would be: Guitar -> DI box which would split the signal to the m-audio and the amp input.

I'm not sure how the reamp compares but I'm going to try and do some research.

or just a splitter like this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Lehle-P-Split-Splitter-Guitar-Pedal-150527-i1326023.gc?source=4WWRWXGP&cagpspn=pla

No, no, no: you already have a DI Box, you don't need another one. I insist: what you need is a reamping device.

Where is your already existing DI Box? On your M-Audio 2626: the "mic/inst" button allows to switch an input between a mic preamp or an instrument preamp. An instrument preamp is, in other words, a DI Box. So you do not need to purchase another one.

Where you are losing sound quality is not at the input of the M-Audio, it is between its output and the amp input: the amp input is not designed to receive line output levels and impedances, which is what the M-Audio feeds it: the amp input is designed for guitar output levels and impedances. A reamping device brings a line output level and impedance back to the level and impedance of a guitar, which in turn is perfectly matched to a guitar amp input.

Hope that helps.

I understand now. Thank you for clarifying that.

So I need something like the

Radial Engineering Reamp JCR Passive Reamper or ProRMP™ Reamp

Reamping technology seems really neat, I can record both at the same time (amp and di) or I can record the amp at a later state(awesome).

Just out of curiousity, would the method I mentioned also work? Guitar signal to DI BOX , 1/4 to guitar amp, xlr to m-audio input?

Yes, it should work, but again, the DI Box is redundant. All you need is a signal splitter with two outputs. There's no need to process or transform the signal's level or impedance. Something like this would be enough:
