Nomenclature
Hi! I am revisiting some old tracks that were recorded using 16 bit,as I am now recording 24 bit what would the status of the new tracks be? Would the new parts be 24bit and the old parts 16bit? Thanks. gdoubleyou
They would be 24bit files, but containing 16 bits of data. 8)
teedoff087
To convert it to 24-bit, Logic simply adds 8 empty bits to each sample. However, if you make any changes to the file in your 24-bit session, those converted files will benefit from the 24-bit conversion.
Eriksimon
If you're re-using 16 bit tracks in a 24 bit session outputting to a 24 bit audio interfaces' outputs, they're still 16 bit tracks. If you first somehow (re-)record those tracks (but why would you?) they would be what gw said. But what is "revisiting" exactly? And with a "track", do you mean a song, or an audio file? David Nahmani
If you're re-using 16 bit tracks in a 24 bit session outputting to a 24 bit audio interfaces' outputs, they're still 16 bit tracks. Exactly. The Logic project doesn't have a bit depth (16 or 24 bits), only the audio files that the project plays do. And a project can perfectly playback some 16 bit audio files and some 24 bit audio files, simultaneously on different tracks, or at different locations on the same track. So there's no such thing as a "24 bit session". Sessions don't have bits. There's a preference bit depth setting, that's a general preference for your system, it does not affect Logic project files, or the way they are played back, it only affects the way new recordings are stored. So if you were to start a project recording some audio files with the "24 bit recording" preference unselected you'd have some 16 bit recordings. Then you select the "24 bit recording" preference, or move the session to another machine that has that preference selected, and make more recordings. The new audio files are 24 bit, the old ones are still 16 bits. Logic has no problem playing both.
