clearitup
Just purchased a UA LA 610 mkii and shure sm7b With setting of +10 gain and 5-7 level, I get some hiss thats noticeable especially when inserting some compression. This hiss sounds like "white noise"

clearitup
Try without the compressor - does the hiss disappear? If I record without the compressor, the hiss is pretty much non existent on the dry track but as soon as I add a plug in compression it appears, mostly noticeable when there is no singing, which looks like the compression just doing its job? I can slice the track and delete the parts where there are no singing. Any other suggestions? I'd like to use the built in compressor on the mkii too. David Nahmani
Sounds to me like the compressor is generating the hiss. Which compressor are you using, and what are your settings? Can you post a screenshot?

Can you post a screenshot? Your right, looks like a combination of plug in issues. I was using waves CLA-2A which has a built in compressor combined with logic's compressor. Lowering the compression on the CLA-2A and lowering the highs on the CLA-2A's eq brings the hiss down to an acceptable level. Thank you for your help as always david. David Nahmani
No problem, glad to hear you're making progress on that issue.
clearitup
No problem, glad to hear you're making progress on that issue. Lowering the Level on my la 610 to about 3-4 also helps. This preamp may get a little noisy when approaching its gain output. max.
Ashermusic
Unless you are doing rap or a screaming rock vocal you would probably be better off with a condenser or ribbon mic than that Sm7b, although for guitar cabinets I still love it. Gravity Jim
My UA Solo 610 is dead quiet even with both the input and output gain cranked to 7 or 8 (for driving low output dynamics like your SM7) and with heavy radio-spot style compression on the track. It should not generate hiss. Did you buy it new or used? Either way, you might have a bum tube.

The hiss is slight but noticeable to my ears especially at higher volumes or with compression. I'll try to make an audio file later today and post it to demonstrate what I'm experiencing. Currently working on rock vocals ( no screaming) I'm overall happy with the sound I'm getting out of the sm7. Which condensers or ribbons do you use for vocals? I have a NT1a but I believe I like the sm7 better for this project.
Ashermusic
Well, if you like the sound you are getting with the sm7b, then by all means use it. I like the Neumann TLM 103 on my voice.
