Old Mac Donald Posted October 30, 2012 Share Posted October 30, 2012 I've decided to clean up my system plus re-install Logic Pro 9 from the discs. My question is: I'm still running Logic 9.1.1 on OSX Snow Leopard and I'm wondering whether I should upgrade Logic now I have a chance to? (Reception is awful in this neck of the woods! I can't get internet access at my studio space and can only get online when I dismantle my system and set it up in a WiFi 'hotspot'.) Thing is, speaking from previous bad experiences where updates are concerned, I worry about the whole upgrading thing - I seem to have adopted the "if it's not broken don't try to fix it" mentality! I'd be interested to hear from folks still working with a Snow Leopard OS running newer versions of Logic 9 and what benefits (if any?) there are to upgrading. (Also, if I do upgrade where are we up to version-wise now - 9.1.8? Plus, do I have to download all the versions from 9.1.2 through to 9.1.8 or whatever or does the latest version include all the info I'll need to get up to speed in one apple site downlaod?) n6smith Posted October 30, 2012 Share Posted October 30, 2012 Why don't you first of all clone (Do not rely on Time Machine as that can cause issues upon restore) your system HD using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or my personal favorite, Super Duper! and then you can try out the updates and if they all work, then great.... and if not you can restore from your Cloned image and you are back to where you started with minimal hassle... To update you should simply install 9.1.8.... you don't need all the earlier ones I believe though Software Updates will sort that out for you. Unless you are you thinking of Time Machine before the file system changes were made to OSX starting from Leopard? I've relied on Time Machine for a complete drive restore many times (and Logic project files). I'd be surprised if Time Machine had generic "issues" restoring (it's whole purpose). n6smith Posted October 31, 2012 Share Posted October 31, 2012 FurryToes, You only have to do a quick search through here to se how many people have had issues with missing stuff after performing a full restore or Migration via TM to see what I mean... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=88792&p=465608&hilit=Time+Machine#p465608 and... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=87501#p459342 ...as two recent examples... of where TM (and MA for that matter) have failed.. peachboy Posted October 31, 2012 Share Posted October 31, 2012 I'm still using Snow Leopard. I don't have any intention of upgrading for a long while as there is simply no need for my purposes. I wouldn't dream of using my central music computer (iMac) for anything other than music - the only time I use it for internet is when having to upgrade various plugins. I have a MacBook which runs Lion for which I do most other business / admin / internet tasks which is fine. But as for production - there really isn't any point in upgrading IMHO. Old Mac Donald Posted October 31, 2012 Author Share Posted October 31, 2012 Well I've managed to temporarily get my Mini Mac online (ethernet - long story!) and have updated my Snow Leopard OS 10.6.4 to 10.6.8. I've also completely reinstalled my Logic Pro 9 and updated from 9.1.1 to 9.1.8 AND, while I was at it, I discovered that my actual Mac Mini (a late 2009 model) can actually support 8GB of RAM ("Way Hey!") so I've ordered two 4GB sticks and am waiting on them in the post. Should hopefully make quite a difference when I'm back up'n'running. I'll let you know how I go on - PHEW!!! (I'm off for a lie down now .....)
