My MIDI Keyboard isn't recognized anymore!

Hi everyone!

I realize that this question has been asked numerous times, and I checked every thread regarding this problem but nothing has helped so far.

Basically, My MIDI Keyboard used to work with Logic, but it doesn't anymore. I tried turning it off and then on, quitting logic and re-opening it, unplugging and plugging it back in. Nothing worked.

I read somewhere that I should check my Audio MIDI Setup in my OSX preferences. So I did, but my device isn't there. I tried to re-scan but nothing happened. I tried to add a new device but I couldn't find my keyboard brand and model in the list and I didn't see any option to add my own. My Keyboard is a Miditech MIDIStart-2. It's a very simple keyboard with only 49 keys and pitch bend and modulation wheels. Still it doesn't work. I tried playing around with Logic Preferences but nothing there worked either. My Caps Lock Keyboard works fine but I can't get my MIDI keyboard to work. someone said I should reset my MIDI devices so I did but nothing happened.

I even visited Environment and tried to see if maybe there is a problem with Clicks & Ports. In the Physical Input box there is only my caps lock keyboard in the list, and it goes through a keyboard input and then to the sequencer input. I tried to add my MIDI keyboard as a physical input but couldn't figure out how.

Some other thread said that maybe the problem is in my controller assignments so I went and deleted everything there but to no avail.

Frankly, it's beginning to piss me off and nothing works. Any help would be appreciated.

*Update*: I forgot to mention that I re-installed the drivers for my keyboard again. I also just tested the keyboard on a friend's laptop so works fine. Obviously, it's not a cable/keyboard/connection problem. How can I determine if my computer is receiving messages from my MIDI keyboard? any external software for that?

*Update*: I just bought a Behringer Axiom 49 Keyboard and it I still Have the same problem. It didn't show up on My Audio MIDI setup utility so I added it manually but still nothing happens in logic. Can this be an OS issue?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I also re-installed the driver. My OSX is still 10.6 so I don't think it's an issue of compatibility. Last week it worked fine and I had the same thing. The USB port is also fine. I changed it back and forth couple of time just for the heck of it, but nothing seems to help. Is there anything in Logic itself I'm missing? There seems to be no section in the preferences that deals with device management. I can find the ones for input output etc. Ableton has the one for MIDI Keyboards in the same section, where's Logic's?

Logic's Midi is handled by the Midi part of the stand alone Audio/Midi setup program in Applications/utilities

As you said the keyboard is not showing up there, then that is where your problem lies (and is actually nothing to do with Logic as such) Until it shows up correctly in the Audi/Midi setup program, Logic will not be able to see it and so you won't be able to use Logic to test anything in this situation.

One last question.. you said you tested it on your friends laptop. Was this a mac or PC and if it was a Mac was he running an identical OS version to you?

If so, time to contact the Keyboard's makers and ask for their help because it does sound like some kind of driver issue... maybe not correctly installed.. or the installation has become corrupted in some way... given you tested it on your friend computer and it worked ok there..

..Finally one last observation.. It looks, after checking out the latest drivers on the Miditech website for you, that this keyboard is actually a rebadged CME keyboard of sort kind.. as it uses CME drivers.. (the actual driver package buried in the zip... is named CME-UF-MIDI-1.2u) so you might want to check with that company if you get no luck with Miditech.

Hi, and thanks for your help. To Answer your question, My friend's laptop was a PC and ran Ableton.

To be honest, what I want to do now, is maybe get a new MIDI keyboard. I wanted to do that for ages, so this may be a sign.

Thanks for your help and your attention anyway.

Honestly, it's could to be a User issue... Something you are not doing correctly.... as the Axiom works find with Logic.. or your OS has somehow become screwed up in some way... or you have a conflict somewhere that is preventing your Midi keyboards from being 'seen' by the OS.

So, first steps to help identify the issue is to outline what you did when you first plugged in your Axiom. Did you install the software first before plugging it in for example? What software did you install for example...and what versions? Can you also confirm your OS and Logic versions are as described in your sig?

Hi

What happens if you unplug all the other USB devices, leaving only the keyboard connected?

Hi! So I just tried this and it still didn't work. Either way my sound card uses a USB. You think this may be a power issue? 'Cuz honestly, I am starting to think the same, but evidence points to the contrary. I mean I've tried the cable on different computers with two different keyboards and it worked. I tried both keyboards with both cables in all 4 combos, and none worked. I've tried all my USB ports, and I've checked all the ports with other USB gadgets and they work fine. It definitely isn't hardware-related. So, software-related? I know Macs shouldn't get viruses but my iMac's performance has been gradually degrading, and not for the lack of HDD space, so I guess they can call it what they want, but virus or not, something is wrong with my OS that wasn't before. As a last resort, I will try to down-grade my OS in a couple of days if I can't solve this.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it, specially since I figured no one would answer this 'cuz the question is so obvious but you have been very kind to lend me your time.

Yep, that was my thought, considering all the bus-powered USB kit you are using. If you have tested with just the keyboard and nothing else and it still doesn't work, then...

You may have a Driver conflict. Might be easiest to test this by using a second drive with a clean OS on it as a testbed. Install the bear minimum of drivers one at a time and test to see when/if it fails.

If you Mac is generally not working well, then you may well have other issues at play. Again, the easiest way to test would be to build a new OS on a second drive.

Thanks a million! I'm not that good with more-than-ordinary issues with computers, But I'll get someone to look into it. Thanks again, hopefully once I fix it, I'll post here what was wrong. It's certainly been the diagnostic challenge of a life-time for me.
