A good midi controller?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, im looking for a good midi controller to use with Logic. I would be using it mostly for Hip Hop production. I dont really need something with a large range, like, two octaves would be fine. but it would be nice if it had drum pads on it. i have been looking around online and i found a couple i think would be good, but i know literally nothing about midi controllers. so i was hoping one of the brilliant people here might be able to help me out. (side note: i dont really have a lot of money, so i guess that is something im taking into consideration.) anyway, here are the controllers i've been looking at. i would appreciate any input you have to offer :)

- M Audio Axiom AIR Mini 32

- Akai Professional MPK25

- M-Audio Axiom 49 2nd Gen 49-Key

- Akai MPK mini

- Samson Graphite 49

- Roland A-300PRO 32-Key (maybe)

im not even sure those work with Logic, but they were ones in my price range (which is under $300, preferably around $200). i know im not going to get some magnificent stuff for that low price, but i just need something basic. more for making loops and laying down simply melodies than anything.

thank you in advance for all your help.

They all work with Logic.

If I were you I'd probably go for the MPK25.

I've got a Korg Nanokey2 and Nanopad2 and they're pretty cool little controllers, especially for the price. Bonus points because you can throw them into a backpack.

Not sure if they would stand up to a professional workflow, and they keyboard might be hard to get use to if you actually know how to play already, but I don't and I like them a lot.

From what I have seen other people use, the AKAI 25 is nice. I don't make hip-hop but I like to watch videos of people doing it. Mainly to try to learn the beats ( I do love beats :) ) but I got the MPK mini on sale for the fact that it has velocity-sensitive keys, and a 2 bank and 8 pad plus 8 knobs for FXs. and it is smaller than a school text book. I can throw my mac, keyboard, headphones and nanokontroler in my massager bag and make music any ware. But at the same time I am looking at a no frills 88 key with maybe the mod wheels like a Keystation 61. So if you want portable the Mini might work but for samples and such I would go with the AKAI 25. The Mini will work with samples if you use the ESX and have the arp on and other stuff. Here is a good vid that shows the Mini, the song is kinda annoying though.

My advice? Stay away form M-Audio controllers.

I here good and bad about all the keyboards. It seems people are 50/50 on every brand of 88keys I look up. I'm actually frustrated that I can't find a good priced (not $800+ ) 88key controller that has a solid reputation. I really don't care much for m-audio, I have a small set of monitors from them I got years and years ago but can you tell me a simple 88key that is good that doesn't break the bank.
