NovaAaron
So I just got a Seagate Hard Drive 1.5 TB. Its a desktop version. On box it said it was only windows format, so I formatted it in disk utility. When I usually track or mix I use the logic file on the external to work on. I did this all the time with my western digital harddrive, now the seagate goes whacky. The song will stop and beep at me and play back only certain tracks in the song. Any ideas or things I should do different? I always thought that if i used the logic file on the external it would help cpu, etc. Maybe I'm wrong. David Nahmani
So I just got a Seagate Hard Drive 1.5 TB. Its a desktop version. How is it connected to your Mac: USB? Firewire?
NovaAaron
USB.
NovaAaron
I formatted it to FAT-32 as well.
n6smith
There is your answer.. US2B is too slow for most audio use and you are using a window's formatted drive... (FAT32) At the very least reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but I suspect that will not fix your issues... due to the fact you are using a USB2 HD... that is probably only 5400rpm too... The minimum recommended specs for an Ext HD for Audio use is FW800 7200rpm
NovaAaron
So I have a macbook pro with 2 usb ports, 1 firewire, and another one Im not sure of. Im using the firewire for my audio interface. What can I do then? Get a faster 2.0 harddrive?
involver
I'd try re-formatting the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) first. It may be fast enough for your needs.
n6smith
Also, which model of Macbook do you have... See this link for how to find out.. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1635?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US I keep asking this because I think you have a FW800 port and you could use that with a FW800 drive for much faster performance... NovaAaron
Yes I do have a FW800. I guess I could do that. Maybe I should just put my files on my hard drive as I go. Like transfer the tracks Im working on at the moment.
n6smith
It would be wise to use your USB2 drive (formatted correctly) for storage of older projects and backups..... Use the system drive for OS and Apps and use an ext FW800 7200 rpm drive via the FW800 port for samples, loops etc... if you can afford it. Then use the FW400 port as you are already doing, for your audio interface. That would be the best config for your system for optimal audio performance. NovaAaron
How would I configure my loops etc. to work like that? So drag my logic over to my mac harddrive?
