Audio signal panned in headphones when recording [SOLVED]

When I record a new track of audio on some existing projects, the signal I'm recording is panned way to the left in my headphones. If I record and play it back, it's centered. This happens only when I'm using my Motu 8pre interface for input and output. I hear the panned signal even if there are no channels with the "Input" or "Record" boxes checked in Logic. When I do check either of the boxes on the channel I get another signal in my phones that adds sound to the right side. I've discovered that unchecking "Universal Track Mode" in Logic's audio preferences solves the problem, but I don't know what other problems that may create.

On some projects I do not have this problem - I hear no signal if the input and record boxes are unchecked and when I do activate the boxes the signal is centered in my phones. When I use the internal mic and speakers on my MacBook Pro I do not have the panning problem. It also doesn't occur if I open a new project and create an audio channel.

After reading about corrupted files in the Logic Pro 9 and Logic Express 9 training book, I tried rebuilding one of the problem projects but this didn't help. I updated the Motu driver and firmware and that didn't help. Motu 8pre support advised to open CueMix (which I never use) and mute all channels. That didn't change anything.

Any suggestions?

This sounds like you're monitoring the recording input through the Motu and the Motu input is panned left.

When I do check either of the boxes on the channel I get another signal in my phones that adds sound to the right side.

This sounds like you're "double monitoring"

Monitoring through the Motu AND Software Monitoring is enabled in Logic.

Use one or the other, but not both.

I've discovered that unchecking "Universal Track Mode" in Logic's audio preferences solves the problem, but I don't know what other problems that may create.

Leave Universal Track Mode enabled.

Unchecking it can lead to mysterious routing issues if you don't know what you're doing.

This points to the Motu.

It also doesn't occur if I open a new project and create an audio channel.

This does sound like possible corruption, if all recording/monitoring settings are the same as the "problem" Projects.

That should have solved the "double monitoring" issue (if that's what was actually occurring).

Thanks for addressing my problem. I got it figured it out. I compared a project that didn't produce the problem with one that did. On the problem project I found open auxilliary channels that had their inputs set to "inputs 1 - 2". When I muted those channels or changed the input button to "no input", the second signal went away. CueMix being on or off didn't affect it one way or the other. I appreciate your trying to help.
