monitor cutting out

Hey friends

 

I had some strange monitoring issues in my last session. My vocalist recorded one verse, and I wanted to modulate up for the next verse. So I option dragged the piano background to copy it, and modulated up on that region. Changed nothing else. But when recording, the copied piano part was inaudible in the monitor, even though the original continued to be heard when playing in that area. Of course it was all on the same track, so there was no difference in input monitoring. Yikes! So I modulated the original piano part, and recorded some more takes. Now I have takes in two different keys in the same take folder. Yuk, what a mess! Couldn't keep the vocalist waiting, inspiration was floating away....What went wrong? (and how do I get out of this mess now?)
