Can you put Channel Strips in Folders?

Hi guys is it possible to put channel strips in folders?.

I bus all my drums and their send/return effect to a "drum master" Aux channel. I'd like to have all my drums channels wrapped up in a folder with the send/returns and then just see one "drum master" Aux channel that I can add effects like eq, comp and limiter..

Thanks

I do something similar. I have two screens. on the left I have two Mixer Windows in rows stacked on top of each other so I can see both at all times. 1 Mixer window is for Inst/Audio channels and window 2 is for Aux/Bus channels..The other screen is the Arrange window.. Set up works really nice but I use a lot of sub groups and would like to use even more each with their own send/return effects. I have busses like Kick, Kick and Bass, Beats, clap/snare, hats, perc/toms, All Drums, drum verb 1 drum vrb 2, echo, delay. Then Mid Bass, Synths, Chords, Leads, Acoustic, FX, and Vox.. and I would like to have multiple send/return effects for each subgroup. By the time that's all done there's around 40 Aux/Bus channels and a lot of them also have tracks for automation.. So it gets pretty messy..

I would like to see a new Channels strip like a Master Aux channel that has a triangle you can click to open more Aux sub channels and click again to hide them.

Instead of the Mixer window, you can create multiple Environment windows. This one you can put whatever channel strip and other objects freely as you will.

The only problem is that they are not dynamic. I use those windows for a custom master control sections. For example, the master channel, some main Aux, a couple of control faders, switches, Monitor fader that controls the Audio Interface vie IAC and a volume fader for the click.

The cool thing is that you can configure each channel strip separately what it should display. For example, on the channel strip of the Click, I need only the Fader and can disable all other components.

This is really one area that shows how unique Logic is compared to other DAWs. As a power user, you can set it up with amazing flexibility the way you need it.

What do you mean by "not dynamic" ?. I think i'll have to have a more in depth look at the Environment.. I've been trying to build a Template that has all my Aux groups (kick, bass, drums...) effects sends (reverb, delay..) and master busses. As well as empty Inst/Audio channels strips with sends already routed

The displayed object in the Environment are static meaning it displays only the object that you created there, you cannot create rules what objects are displayed when.

The mixer window has dynamic views. If you select to display Audio Channels then the window will automatically add every Audio Channel that you add in your Project. That means you didn't create the Audio Channels, you defined the rule by selecting that view button "... show any Audio Channel in my Project".

Hi guys is it possible to put channel strips in folders?

Totally do-able. Pencil in blank regions on the tracks that you wish to appear in the folder, pack only those regions (don't select any other regions on the tracks) and the channel strips associated with those regions will all appear in the folder. Once you select that folder, then the mixer window view will follow suit and display the same track objects.

With this approach you can you can create any combination of channel strips that you want to see in the folder - one audio channel, four auxes and a master output for instance - and you can use the same channel strip in many different folders.

If you have multiple folders set up in this way, then clicking on each folder brings up a mixer that is particular to the objects contained in the folder.

It's also possible to edit the view within the folder by adding or subtracting tracks in the same way you would do in the top level Arrange window.

Oh I see. You can't choose to view only Audio channels or only Aux channels. The Environment shows everything all the time

Oh nice, thanks. This looks pretty good.. Last question though.. Can I put channels strips in folders without having their Arrange window tracks in folders? I like seeing everything together on the arrange window..

An environemnt window shows exaclty what you created there. If you want to dive a little bit deeper then there are exceptions. There are special windows for example "Mixer". MIDI Instr. that add Channel Strips and MIDI Objects automatically when you create them (or delete them). However with newly created Environment windows, whatever objects you create there, are the ones that are displayed.

About the Folders. Yes you can group Tracks in the Arrange window and when "entering" folders, the mixer window will follow. However there is one problem with that solution - you have to use Folders.

I tried it several times but never could make use of that folder concept in Logic. That whole packing and unpacking just messes up your Track and Channel Strip arrangements.

You will have both - the top level Arrange will have all your tracks, the folders will have only the tracks associated with the channel strips you have chosen to appear in the folders. It will make more sense once you try it out! :)
