NickMagick
so I'll be getting a new Mac Mini soon. I know SSD's are much better than a regular drive, but I've heard decent things about the Fusion Drive. Essentially I think it's maybe a 128SSD or less and once it fills up it switches over to the other HDD. I guess I'm wondering if it would be worth it to spend the cheese and just get the 256 straight up. It would be nice to have a full TB though as I have a lot of plug-ins/samples/ and the like. Just curious what people's opinions are. Thanks in advance!
steveo12ax7
I'm also curious to know what people think of the Fusion drive for audio use. So far I haven't seen many reviews of it specific to our application. I've read that the system has some low-level processes for deciding how to use the SSD/HD sections, but nobody has posted any info about how that relates to reading and writing audio files to it. roojam
I had the very same question yesterday. I just ordered my Mac Mini and got the Fusion Drive rather than the 256GB. My decision was in part due to my experience with how slow a drive becomes based on percentage fill. From what I read, the Fusion drive will continually move older less used files off the SSD drive and onto the HDD once you reach full capacity thus leaving a 4G space empty at all times. I'll probably end up getting a thunderbolt external drive to semi-archive my projects and try to keep the Fusion drive relatively uncluttered. Here's another strategy I have - once I get my system set up and running I plan to NOT update the OSX. Ive had a few Macs since 2005 and am firmly convinced that installing OSX updates have a detrimental effect on performance. I'll post my findings once I get some time under my belt with my new Mac Mini.
qwertynyc
Hi Roojam, Could you possibly let me know how the Fusion Drive has been working out for you in Logic Pro? I'm planning on purchasing a 27" iMac, and much like you, am deciding whether i should invest in the full SSD drive for the OS. Over time I know I will need to have an external thunderbolt drive to store/stream sample. Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated. britta
Hi Roojam, I too would love to know how the fusion drive is working out for you before I purchase a Mac mini. Thanks!
