Midi Track Sounds

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased the Main Room Midi sample pack from Zenhiser. This was my first purchase of a sample pack so maybe it's just my lack of knowledge but when I try and open the midi file for a sample from the Main Room pack into Logic, it opens up/imports the sample as a piano instrument and automatically plays the standard piano keys instead of the pack sounds. It shows the midi note sequence but I just don't know which instrument to play it on. Do I have to convert the midi or do anything like that? I tried manually dragging it on to a track as well with no luck. Any suggestions?

The Main Room MIDI Tracks are just MIDI files, no sounds, no samples: just the MIDI performance. MIDI is just the note & controller information.

So yes, it's up to you to open those MIDI files in Logic (choose File > Open), then create software instrument tracks, choose your desired sound for each track, and drag and drop the MIDI regions onto the tracks you've created.

I'm still a bit confused. I've tried opening the samples with software instruments as well as dragged them onto selected track(s). The audio tracks play when I create them on an audio file track, but the midi ones don't. The pack I got has a separate file for audio and midi files, both containing the same sounds in the two different formats. Is the audio track the only one I'll be able to play? I thought I'd be able to use my midi keyboard to make unique sequences using the samples in the pack for customization purposes. Is that not the case?

Did you choose sounds for those tracks? Did you load an instrument?

As far as I can tell from the description, the audio in your pack is just a recording of what the MIDI patterns sound like once you have them trigger sounds. You still need to have the MIDI files trigger some instruments.

Create a software instrument track, choose a setting from the Library, and drag your MIDI region onto that track, you should hear something.

Correct, I do hear the MIDI sequence played on the track, but I hear the notes played through a software instrument such as the EVP88 or EXS24 which has a bland standard key sound (before you add anything to it). The sequence of notes will be playing in midi form but they sound like the software instrument that is supporting them, so all I hear is beeps of midi data instead of the big synth sounds which I should be hearing.

I see what you mean by choosing it under Library, but none of the sample sounds are listed under there. All there is is one for Factory and Garageband and neither of the folders contained the samples. I tried copying the midi sample folder into the Factory folder via Finder but Logic isn't showing anything relating to the samples. Would I have to save them to a certain location in this case?

Again, your pack does NOT contain samples. From your pack's description: Please Note: This pack does not include the drums used in the preview. For drum sounds like these check out 'Progressive House Drummer'.

The confusion probably comes from the .wav included with your pack, but those are not samples of single shot drums, they are, from the description...250 slammin wav's created using these exquisite midi files.

Your solution is either to follow my suggestions and use some of Logic's factory sound, or purchase the Progressive House Drummer sample pack.

Sorry if I sound confusing, I guess I'm referring to the sample sounds as the audio files they gave me in the audio folder. I just want to be able to take a note from that stream of audio data of a track/sample/whatever you call it (within the audio folder) and play it on my midi. I don't know how else to explain this I just can't seem to get the midi tracks to play their sounds. Appreciate the help big time so far though.

You do not sound confusing and I understand what you want, but it seems you don't understand what I'm saying....

I understand that's what you want, but you can not do that: you do not have the samples. The .wav files you see in your pack are NOT samples. You need to either purchase the samples or use other ones.

So this means that basically what I see is what I get? In other words I don't have any sort of ability to manipulate any of the sounds in the package other than adding effects onto them and such. Thank you for the clarification as well.

Yes: the package you bought is mostly, as its name implies, a package of MIDI Tracks. And MIDI are not sound. They are just patterns aimed to trigger sounds you already own. Then they decided to throw some recordings of those MIDI sequences triggering some of their sounds, but the sounds are not included in your pack, you'd have to purchase another pack to get them.

Oh ok, clearly got the wrong pack then...but thanks again for clarifying! I'll have to make use of it for the time being. For the future though, would a pack such as https://www.zenhiser.com/products/Sylenth-Progressive-House.html or https://www.zenhiser.com/products/Massive-Progressive-Presets.html be a better option to go with in terms of being able to use the samples more freely?
