djmarksmith
Hi Need a little help with choosing nearfields and im on a bit of budget. This is gonna be my first set of monitors ever and im struggling a bit. Im a drummer using a yamaha DT kit and firing off through logic and decided its about time i get some decent ish monitors. I have been looking at the Rokit 8 and Yamaha HS80. I know the yamaha have fantastic pedigree with NS10 and they seem to have been the industry standard for studios Has anyone got any experience with both these and which would be better for drum work cheers guys
shivermetimbers
Have you considered a KRK 10s Active Subwoofer? You already have the G5's, right? I don't think either one of your choices would be bad, although things would also depend on the size of your room/how loud you will play. Matt Mayfield
The HS80s are very good hobbyist-budget monitors (I own a pair) but they sound very different from NS10s (used to work in a studio with them). The NS10s have amazingly quick transient response in the midrange, like a "grot box," and the HS80s are typical ported two-way monitors. If you're in a typical home hobby bedroom-sized studio room, IME good acoustic treatment (NOT light/thin foam; heavy-duty bass absorbers) will make a bigger difference to clearly hearing your mixes than picking the right monitors. mdee
I traded my Rockit 6's for the HS50's. I should have purchased them in the first place.
krist
Another worthy contender in that price range - Mackie MR8 MKII.
