Environment / Time-based MIDI note tracing [SOLVED]

Hi,

Does Environment allow time-based programming (in addition to event-based)?

For instance while a region is played, say, if now = start of a bar, find the note being played on a given MIDI melody track (assuming that there is such a track, with a note at the beginning of every bar) and then the info can be used to trigger a chord or notes elsewhere.

Chandra

Or, just wondering is it possible to trigger something (like arp) from the notes played on one midi track if and only if there is a note on some other midi track during playback?

(In this way I can place a dummy track with a note at start of every bar, replacing the need for time tracking).

Regards,

Chandra

Yes, you could use Touch Tracks in Gate mode, then the length of the MIDI note on the Touch track determines the length. Then every MIDI note triggers the sequence from its beginning.

Or you could use a Noise gate, in which case you're gating a channel strip with MIDI notes on another track, in which case the channel strip plays whatever's on the track at that time - it could be audio or MIDI:

1) Create a software instrument track: that will be your "trigger" track: the one where you put the MIDI notes that will determine when to open/close the gate on the other channel strip.

2) Insert an EXS24 and do not load any instrument, so your trigger notes generate a sine wave.

3) Set the output of that software instrument to a bus.

4) Delete the Aux (with input set to that bus) that Logic automatically created in #3.

5) On the last insert of the channel strip you want to gate, insert a Noise Gate.

6) Top right of the Noise Gate plug-in select the bus from #3.

7) Adjust the threshold, attack and release of the noise gate to get the desired effect.

Thanks so much David.

I want to use Environment.. so, I shall try the first method (need to learn more on Touch Tracks though). Very promising.

Tried Noise gate, wow, it is a cool thing to know. Thanks for your time to list the steps so clearly.

Best regards,

Chandra

PS. Don't know how to get the msg '[sOLVED]' in subject, but consider this as solved!
