thunderbolt hub?

Recommended Posts

Hi. Has anyone tried the Lacie eSata hub yet? I was thinking about picking it up because I'm sick of seeing the "Disc too slow or system overload error." And since I have a macbook pro with only one thunderbolt connection (which is being used by my extra monitor), and the firewire port is in use by my Echo Audiofire Pre8, I thought daisy-chaining a thunderbolt hard drive would be only choice (if I want to gain the advantage of having samples and audio files on separate drives).

Check it out if you haven't seen it yet:

Please post any findings! :)

Cause Lord knows I'm sick of freezing all of my tracks!

You should first determine which one it is: disc too slow OR system overload. If you're maxing out your CPU, buying the fastest drive in the world won't help you.

To determine this, when you get the alert, look at your CPU and HD meters in the transport bar, and see which one is reaching high?

Is the freezing of tracks or bouncing of tracks a good way to get rid of the CPU load?

Yes but both those solutions also affect your HD performance, so not a good idea if you want to TEST to determine whether your current bottleneck is the HD or the CPU.

If so, is bouncing in place more effective than freezing tracks?

As long as you get rid of the plug-ins both methods are just as effective, but freezing will put 1.5x more strain on your HD.

Also note that when freezing, the audio tracks generated will live in the project folder. So if HD overload is the problem, freezing tracks will probably make it worse. If CPU is the only problem, freezing tracks will improve/clear up things.

(it would be great if the location of frozen tracks' audiofiles was a user preference. It makes sense to put freeze files on the disk with sample libraries...)

Another useful strategy is to do an "oldskool" bounce down, which is combining several tracks into one: solo the appropriate tracks and hit bounce, and reimport the bounced file); then mute the original tracks AND regions AND bypass all their plugins and use the bounced down file instead.
