RADPiANO
Hello I wish to record in real time what I am playing on my iPad directly in Logic Pro on my MacBook. For example : I have the iMiniMoog App on my iPad 2, and I want to play it realtime using a full size keyboard as my controller which requires the use of he Dock Connection. So my only audio out of the iPad is the headphone jack out of my iPad. When I say real time I mean real time. Let's say I have a rhythm bed and I want to perform a Moog solo, using the iPad sounds for the solo. What is the best way to capture those sounds ? Should I get some sort of audio to digital converter ? How about the Headphone jack out of the iPad to the Mic in on the MacBook ? Any suggestions are welcome... Thanks ! Eric Cardenas
Please add your Logic version and system info to your signature: Forum Rules - please READ THIS before posting (#5) You can use the mic input but I would recommend a proper interface instead. David Nahmani
Should I get some sort of audio to digital converter ? That's actually called an audio interface. How about the Headphone jack out of the iPad to the Mic in on the MacBook ? That would mean you use the Mac's built-in interface. GIve it a try and see how happy you are with the quality of the audio you record.
fastfourier
The 3.5mm input socket on the Macbook is a line-level input, and you can connect it to the headphone jack on your iPad with no problems. Grab a 3.5mm -> 3.5mm stereo cable and you'll be golden. There is a "gain control" for the Macbook line input in System Preferences -> Sound -> Input tab (select "Line In" in the list). Start with that at about halfway, and adjust the iPad volume until you get a good signal into Logic - I'd recommend it peaking at about -10dB or thereabouts. fastfourier
So I got curious and went looking for some information on how the built-in input's level slider works. There is a bit of data on the Mac Pro which says it scales from 0dB to +30dB, and I'm assuming the reference level is -10dBV. But I have no idea if all Apple computers are created alike (I don't even have a proper one). Anyway, the relevant part to OP is that you might want to start with your "Input Volume" slider in System preferences to the left. Maybe some nice person can measure their inputs and finally there will be some decent technical data on the web..

fastfourier
combined headphones/mic 3.5mm jack Nasty! I imagine there aren't too many people who use both the line in and out at the same time though, hence it getting dropped. Hopefully OP has a separate input socket though, judging by the wording of his post. You could always aggregate in one of these. They are pretty good! I haven't taken the time to measure one properly but I would classify the output as "OK" - on a par with the typical laptop converters anyway. And for $1.16 + free shipping, how can you go wrong? You need a TRRS connector. http://cdn.head-fi.org/6/62/900x900px-LL-62156fa4_plugsnshit.png
gdoubleyou
I use an Alesis iO Dock with my iPad. It allows me to connect a USB keyboard and send audio/midi to Logic. http://www.alesis.com/iodock 8)
RADPiANO
I'm using LP 8.0.2 - OS 10.6.8 I took the advice about running direct from the headphone out to the line in. It works - and I'm pleased with the sound. However - I hear the sounds on playback, not when I'm actually playing. Anymore advice ? Thanks ! RADPiANO
Ran home and opened Preference Audio and Voila ! Works like a champ - Thanks ! I tried three apps - Alchemy, iMiniMoog and Garage Band. Really pleased with the sound and performance on the first two. able to turn knobs, open filters etc while recording live. Really works nice and on listening to the tracks I'm please with the quality of audio for what I'm doing. The only issue is with the Garage Band App there is quite the latency issue. I was hoping to trigger drums in real time and it's just not happening. On the iMiniMoog I can play all the 32nd notes I want and they're right there. Thanks everyone !
