nicholasseink
I'm new to logic and the recording process in general but my friend gave me a tascam us144mkii so i could record guitar and bass, that works fine and i can hear everything fine, but just recently i went and got a microphone so i could record acoustic guitar/ vocals and all i get is a loud fuzz noise. My friend plugged the mic into his interface and it works fine so it has to be something with my interface and logic. -i have logic express -tascam us144mkii -sterling audio st55
Eric Cardenas
Did you turn the phantom power on? What kind of Mac do you use? Eric Cardenas
Have you tried the interface with a dynamic microphone that doesn't require phantom power? Try changing the USB port. Try changing the USB cable. You could also try using a powered USB-hub.
David Nahmani
Also make sure you download and install the latest driver compatible with your system for the Tascam: http://tascam.com/product/us-144/downloads/
nicholasseink
I've downloaded and installed all updates. I have not yet tried a different microphone. but when i plug in my electric guitars i can hear everything perfectly so doesn't that mean the interface is working. i tried different usb ports. is there any setting i should change in logic before trying to record vocals? David Nahmani
There's no setting to change in Logic that's specific to vocal recording - Logic just records audio, it doesn't care whether it's guitar, vocal, synth, or anything else. You could check the mic, the mic preamp, and the mic cable: - What mic? - Is it brand new? - Have you ever recorded successfully with that mic? - You have two mic preamps on the Tascam, have you tried using the other mic preamp? - Do you have another mic cable you could switch? nicholasseink
it's a brand new sterling audio st55 mic i have tried both preamps i have never had a successful recording with the mic although my friend plugged in the mic with the same mic cable into his interface and it worked fine could it be that the tascam isn't compatible with the mic? also when i plug it in and speak into the mic it shows that it is picking up a signal on the tascam but i'm not getting any sound out of my headphones/speakers. David Nahmani
could it be that the tascam isn't compatible with the mic? No, your mic is compatible with the mic preamps on the Tascam. Ok so it sounds like it's not the cable. Have you tried the other mic preamp? i have never had a successful recording with the micalthough my friend plugged in the mic with the same mic cable into his interface and it worked fine So your friend had a successful recording with the mic? Your mic? Do you have another mic you could try with the Tascam?
Eriksimon
but when i plug in my electric guitars i can hear everything perfectly so doesn't that mean the interface is working. Not necessarily - your Mic preamps can be broken without affecting the guitar inputs. crucial: have you flipped this switch? also when i plug it in and speak into the mic it shows that it is picking up a signal on the tascam but i'm not getting any sound out of my headphones/speakers. Now that appears to mean the Mic is working (green/red led just under the level knob) but the signal is somehow not being directed towards your outputs. Where are your speakers attached? Where is your headphone plugged in to? If you plug your headphones directly into the Tascam, you still hear nothing? If you have routed the signal through Logic, have you turned on Software Monitoring? You have selected the Tascam as in- and output device in the Logic audio preferences, right? And you have created a mono audio track with correct in- and ouput settings?
Eric Cardenas
Did you try another USB cable? Did you try a powered USB2-hub? The tascam is bus powered. Some computers will not provide the required amount of current to power a 48V microphone.

David Nahmani
when the interface is plugged in i can't hear anything? Do you have headphones or speaker monitors connected to your interface?
