camillo jr
I want to create a single EXS instrument that has all the snares from the EXS acoustic snare folder. This is so I can import from that into Ultrabeat and have the full list of snares available. I'm not sure how to get one snare from one EXS instrument into another. I've got two EXS snare instruments open but I can't find a way of getting the stack of multisamples from one instrument to another. So, For instance, I want Snare D1 1on the D key, Snare D1 2 on the E key and so on. Is there a way? I started the process by creating a new instrument that has the "D1 1" stack on it and then pulled back the zones so they would end at the D key. Now I want to import the next stack, with all it's settings, velocity etc, into that same instrument.
camillo jr
Some progress being made. Turns out I need to drag the zones from one EXS edit window into the zone area of another EXS edit window. So as an experiment, I've created an EXS instrument that has two different snares in it - one on the D key and another on the E key. So far so good. BUT - when I open Ultrabeat and try to import that same EXS instrument, I don't see individual instruments like you would see in a UB snare bank preset - I see individual snare samples, which is not very useful. (In fact, I think what I'm seeing in that list is the same sample at several different pitch levels, which is even less useful.) I suspect this is because each of the original EXS snare instruments are multisamples whereas the UB snare bank sounds like it's just individual samples for each different snare. Is that the case? Will the multisample nature of the EXS snares preclude seeing each stack as a single instrument on one line of the UB import list?

I think so... only .ubs files can have multi samples CCT

I think so... only .ubs files can have multi samples CCT Hmmm.... that may be the case although if I import a single EXS snare instrument into Ultrabeat it does import the multisamples. Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way? The other way is to directly create a snare bank in UB (where I have a list of different snares I could load onto a single key) but I'm not finding any straightforward instructions about how to do that in the manual. Anyone have some links to share about this process??
camillo jr
Alright, even more progress. If I want a specific EXS instrument to take up only one line in the Ultrabeat list, I need to limit the zone of that stack of samples to one semitone. Initially, my first sample stack ended at the D key but it's range went all the way to the bottom, so the UB import window showed every space as being filled with that sample. After moving up the zone boundary of that sample stack so that it only lived on the D key and then saving the EXS instrument again, the new version shows up in UB's import window as living on only one line. The second snare takes up two semitones (D# and E) so in the UB window you see that one as taking up two lines. Eureka!!
CCTMusic
Hi My original reply is BS... (not enough coffee) when you import EXS instruments this does work fine.. importing individual 'samples' does not directly allow for vel. switching unless they are .ubs files. DaveRobinson
The other way is to directly create a snare bank in UB (where I have a list of different snares I could load onto a single key) but I'm not finding any straightforward instructions about how to do that in the manual. Anyone have some links to share about this process?? Love where you're going with this thread... It's quite a task to find a happy medium when sharing samples between Ultrabeat and EXS. Here's where i'm up to. I'll start with your last question first and explain how I create a snare bank of snares for ultrabeat. Save your current Ultrabeat kit or better still create a new project to begin organising your samples. Start by selecting the preset 01-Drum Kits > Drag & Drop samples. Set that aside for now and use Finder to search and audition your snare samples. Create a new folder in your samples library UltraBeatKits > Snares-01 Copy and paste up to 24 snare samples into this folder. To build your drum bank set your workspace so you can see ultrabeat GUI and your finder window side by side. Drag & Drop from Finder the first snare sample to the bottom Assignment track Sample Window in ultrabeat, the second snare sample to the track above and continue until to have a kit comprising of 24 snares. Rename the tracks, Snare-01, snare-02 all the way up the assignment tracks then go to "Save Setting As" name the pre set the same as the folder "Snares-01"… Once you've saved your kit of snares, reset ultrabeat back to 01 Drum Kits > Drag & Drop Samples. Turn on voice auto select, click on "Import" and browse to your user settings folder and import your Snares-01.pst. Your 24 snares show up in the window next to the assignment tracks, you can click on a snare here to audition the sample and Drag/Drop or right click copy/paste your snare to the assignment track of your choice. --- This is fine, however EXS24 has the feature where if you sample name ends with "underscore Key name" EXS24 will set your sample to the right key automatically, so I'm in the process of finding a happy medium here. e.g. This represents the bottom six tracks in an Ultrabeat kit using 3 kicks and 3 snares Snr20_F1 Snr21_E1 Snr22_D#1 Kik23_D1 Kik24_C#1 Kik25_C1 I'm sure the naming of the samples to begin with is the secret here but it's a lot of background work. Setting aside sessions dedicated to building kits is essential as this would be a full stop if you are in a creative flow in a project. Hope this Helps.. camillo jr
Thanks for this run-down, that's good to know. Sounds like it only works for creating single-sample kit pieces? The thing I'm doing is turning the multisample EXS snares into something that can be opened by UB, with all their pre-existing velocity settings. DaveRobinson
Yes, it seems single-sample kit pieces is how drag/drop exs files configure within ultrabeat. The pic at the end of this post will let you see where i'd got up to before reading your post. Looks like the kit I'd chosen to work with doesn't have the assortment of layers needed to explore enough into what you're working on. I'll be looking more into this. The samples at the bottom of the pic (below 25) are the unused samples, two of them relate to the snare (Rim). Renaming the samples as below is the reason i'd moved away from creating "Banks". Going to spend some more time with this the next time I work in logic.
camillo jr
Now that I've finished this uber snare preset, I thought I might as well share it! It has all the snares from the single drums / acoustic snare folder in one EXS instrument, each snare on one key. How is this useful? In Ultrabeat, you can now import this one preset (rather than having to go back and forth to the acoustic snares folder) and load all the snare choices at once. You'll get a list of all snares which you can click on individually and drag your choices over to the slots. Since these are multisamples, the audio previews for each snare won't sound quite as detailed as the actual snare stack, once it's loaded into a slot. Hopefully, this will work on other systems and the EXS Acoustic Snare Bank preset should be able to find the samples on your drive. If not, oh well! Location: I put it in two places, the first being the EXS Acoustic Snares folder but I also put a copy here: Library / Application Support / Logic / Plug-in settings / Ultrabeat Even though this is a .pst folder, Ultrabeat seems to be able to load the EXS preset from that location. This is probably the most convenient place to put it since it's one of the folders that Ultrabeat seems to go to automatically when you click the import button.
