Multitimbral midi track extraction.

I dumped some Multitimbral midi data from a keyboard onto a midi track on Logic.I was hoping each channel would be recorded on a separate track respectively, but that did not happen even though I had 16 midi tracks with record on.ALl data has gone into 1 track with all other tracks just empty. So is there anyway I can extract each channel into a separate midi track?

Thanks.I'm not sure if I can import the flle directly from the Motif. Thanks for the suggestion.

I did the extraction as per your method & have each channel on different tracks. How do I know which channel is on which track? I see all tracks having the same channel number (1) .For some reason when I try to change the channel number for a single track, all tracks change along with it giving it all the same channel number. Also, when I try to solo a single track, all tracks get soloed!

I havent worked on midi tracks very much so sorry for the ignorance.

Select the MIDI regions, and look at the contents of the regions in the Event list, it will display the MIDI channels of each event.

Why are you trying to change the MIDI channels of the tracks: what are you trying to achieve? Are those external MIDI track, routed to an external MIDI destination and in that case, which one? If you're just going to use software instruments tracks, then the MIDI channel doesn't matter?

Thanks for the reply.I want to know the channel number so i can match it to the tones selected on the keyboard.I am going to use AUs & not external instruments.I may be able to work around without knowing the channel number but then for some reason when I load a plug in to a single track it becomes common for all the the other 15 tracks. When I solo or mute a track all other 15 tracks get muted! I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

If you're going to use AUs then the MIDI channels of your tracks don't matter. If you're able to successfully split the MIDI data on individual tracks then you're fine, and you can forget about MIDI channels altogether.

To create multiple software instrument track click the + button at the top of the track list, and enter the number of software instrument tracks you'd like to create in the "New Tracks" dialog. This will create new tracks assigned to new independent channel strips.

Yes, you can. You export the MIDI file from the Motif to a thumb drive. Simple, direct and takes a fraction of the time to record real time...

I tried importing the midi file through my Motif's thumb drive but Logic does not read the Motif format.

Also I tried Extracting by the method you previously suggested MIDI>Separate MIDI Events> By Event Channel. from the midi track that contains all 16 channels. The extraction works but it still is mysterious why when I press the solo.mute button on one track all other tracks go solo/mute ! Makes it impossible to use a dedicated plug in for a single selected track as the plugin plays for all the 16 tracks !

Guess I would have to send midi tracks 1 by 1 on the highest tempo to save time.

Of course it doesn't. The Motif format Is Not a MIDI file, you perhaps saved it as a Motif song file, arp file, pattern, etc... Those files are proprietary (read only by the particular Motif you have with the exception of the XF reading XS files, I believe).

You would save the file as an SMF (Standard MIDI Format) with the extension .mid.

Separate MIDI Events> By Event Channel creates multiple tracks assigned to the same channel strip.

I gave you the solution earlier:

To create multiple software instrument track click the + button at the top of the track list, and enter the number of software instrument tracks you'd like to create in the "New Tracks" dialog. This will create new tracks assigned to new independent channel strips.

  • 4 months later...

I'm sorry I have to keep this old thread running.I was hoping things would be easier on the midi side to work with on Logic pro x ,but I seem to be stuck still.

I dumped 16 channels of midi data on 1 midi track & separated midi events by channel & got them on 16 different tracks.I can now assign different channels to each track. My next step is assigning different midi instruments on each track & assign individual channels for each track correspondingly.

Now here's where I am stuck although it is Logic x this time. When I assign ,acoustic guitar on channel 2 all other tracks too are loaded with the same instrument. Also when I try to solo one track with the solo button,on all other tracks are on solo. There is no way I can assign different instruments on each track & solo them separately.I am sure there should be an easier way to get this done. Can someone help pls.Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Thanks.I think I am able to understand now.I added new tracks, then separated midi events by channel from the original track onto new tracks that it created (those problematic tracks). But then I was able to move each track onto the new tracks I created with the add track option.I guess this should work.

Thanks for your patience & help.Sorry for the confusion.

There are various methods to "extract" the desired data for each track. My favorite is to copy the region that contains ALL the data on ALL the new tracks. Then one by one, select a region in the workspace, and delete the notes you don't want in the Piano Roll.

The key command "Invert Selection" (Shift-I) may come in handy.
