drhoust
Hi guys, I want to do a clean install of OSX - is there anyway that I can do a clean install but restore my programs after? I really dont want or have the time to re-install Logic, Pro Tools, Komplete, countless sample libraries, one by one. Like perhaps a time machine back up that just restores everything but the OS to how it was before? Probably a long shot but worth a try
David Nahmani
The definition of a "clean" install is that you wipe out your drive and install a brand new fresh version of OS X. That means none of your apps are present and you'll have to reinstall them. If you don't want to do that, you don't want a clean install, just do a regular install and all your apps and folders and files will stay right where they are. jamstock
Can't you do a clean install and then use migration assistant to restore files/ applications from time machine?
David Nahmani
But then... what would be the point of the clean install in the first place? Typically the reason for a clean install is to start building a new system from scratch, clean, without any of the issues that plagued the old system. Using migration assistant to restore files and apps on a clean install would be like moving all your old couches and mattresses into the brand new apartment you just moved into because you had bed bugs in the old one. On top of that, migration assistant presents all kinds of issues when working with music apps. I don't recommend using it.
drhoust
Thanks for the advice guys... yes, i gathered that I would not get what i wanted... The main reason I want to do a clean install is because, when I moved from Lion to Mountain lion I was presented with all sorts of issues, relating not to programs and stability - but to Audio, specifically with my Metric Halo interface... Now I know some people called me crazy as their systems where fine, however it was a very real issue, and when i presented the problem to the guys at MH they agreed with me and created a new driver specifically based on the problems i presented to them, as well as others with similar problems... For some reaosn that driver did not fix the problem, so i went back to Lion. Now my hard drive crashed a few weeks back and the only TIME MACHINE backup I had was the snapshot of the time, when I was having those exact problems... I now, thus do not have my previous lion back up to restore to, so I am stuck with very strange audio problems.. A lot of people on other forums believe my problems will be solved by doing a clean install as it was possibly some anomoly of bad code that happened when i did the update from lion to ML. So the issues plagueing the old system was the OS not the programs it seems!?!
David Nahmani
So the issues plagueing the old system was the OS not the programs it seems!?! You're guessing/hoping that the bedbugs were in the walls, not in the furniture. To save time you make the decision to bring your old furniture into the new apartment rather than buy brand new furniture. I don't think you're saving time, because there's a real chance that you'll end up with the same problems you were suffering from and may very well end up having to move to another apartment yet again, this time buying new furniture - when you could have done that in the first place.
