Jan Steele
When I record a software instrument, either an internal Logic one or a plugin like KONTAKT, the level on the channel strip meter is very low (usually -12dBFS max). I know that I could insert a gain plugin, but is this normal, or have I got something adjusted wrong to begin with?
redlogic
Most (all?) instruments have a volume knob/slider/something. Turn it up.
Eriksimon
Sounds fine to me. -12 dBfs is not that soft - I'd say it is a good starting point for any sound in any mix. But, if you want it louder, simply use the volume control onboard the instrument - it is good practice to start any gain staging at the source. The mixer faders can be used later on, for fine® mixing.
