Getting a good bass in my new song...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys im in the middle of reading the bible of Logic Pro 8 right now and still trying and learning everything about producing dubstep. The only synth i have is Massive 1.3. And my question is how do i get a simple bass hit in my song like the hard bass used in rap songs. I stillllll cant figure it out. Please help if you have any knowledge about this. I know its a simple solution. I just cant seem to figure it out. Haha.

You could use the EQ to shape it, and add distortion to harsh it, but ideally you should also reserve its low frequency space by cutting the other tracks low ends... Adding use of SubBass to boom it could also help, depending of the sound you are actually looking for, bro. Chill yo man! 8)

Yeah i appreciate the heads up bro. But what exactly would i be shaping with the EQ? Like what is the initial sound i need to work with? A bass guitar? Or a low humming noise inside of massive and tweak it? Im not sure.

IMO You can't go wrong with a bass guitar but there are no rules to this. Use whatever sounds pleasing to your ears or if you are trying to emulate a specific song, whichever comes closest to that song.

Hi,

I don't have Massive, but what you need to do is familiarize yourself with some synth basics, especially ADSR envelopes in this case.

First, read this: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul99/articles/synthsecrets.htm (the whole "synth secrets" series is a great resource).

Then read the Massive manual, as judging from this thread: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3771538 envelopes and routing work a little differently than other synths.

It would be worth your while learning the functions on Logic's more simple synths (ES1 is a good start), then extrapolating those lessons to more complex ones.
