steveo12ax7
Just a heads-up because I spent a few hours last night wondering why I couldn't save a project with track-stacks in it without crashing 100% of the time. It was my old LP9 template. If you're seeing any flaky behaviour or crashing, ditch the template first. Common sense for most of you probably, but I'm relieved to know Logic X is much more stable than I initially thought!
fisherking
first thing to do; open your template, then SAVE it as a template, so it is now an LX template...THEN work from that. all good here...

It's much better to start from scratch. Specially with a new iteration of Logic. The Logic project file has changed significantly between the different versions. Don't know if this is the case between 9 and X but I wouldn't be surprised.

Particularly controller assignments for my MPK-61.... instant crash. I would advise playing around with it for a bit, and when you have a reasonable idea of the sorts of things it can do (such as Smart Controls) then make a new template from scratch.
