anp27
You know... the main keyboard riff at the beginning of the song... Any ideas?

anp27
The nasal one at 0:05? Yes, at the top the song where it's just the vocals and keys..
theambertheatre
hmm could be a rhodes, clavinet or mellotron hi passed and distorted/.bitcrushed. or a couple of saws slightly detuned hi passed and dist/bitcrushed. i've achieved similar sounds by processing synths through a bunch of distortions and eq's
Eriksimon
It sounds to me like a slightly band passed analog (VCO) synth trying to be something sort of kind of like a piano. So yeah, saw waves and an ADSR (envelope) set like a piano. A: 0; D: longish- use ears; S: 0 and R: short- use ears
anp27
Thank you theambertheatre and Eriksimon! Can you maybe suggest how I might do what you guys wrote about in Logic?
Eriksimon
Try the Retrosynth, analog, and/or try some keyboardy presets on the ES2. You could also try Sculpture. Just browse through piano/keyboard-like presets until you find something that comes close, then try to fine-tweak that. For the bandpassing you can use the audio fx insert AUBandpass (in the Apple folder on the insert plugins dropdown list).
David Nahmani
I would make sure the AUBandpass (or whatever EQ plug-in you choose to use to dramatically cut both lows and high frequencies and give this sound its 'telephone EQ' kinda sound) is on while you tweak the synth. That way you already have that narrow-frequency sound set up and all you've got left to do is find the right synth patch.
