How Do You Mix Your Drum Machine?

Topic dedicated to how you mix your drum machine within Logic. I'm curious to see if anyone has a different way of accomplishing this.

For instance I use my Electribe ESX-1 be triggered via a single MIDI Instrument track. As soon as I have the overall drum lick arranged I will "demix the MIDI region by note pitch". Now I have the kick, snare, etc. all seperated on independent MIDI instrument tracks and I name them.

Now if I want to insert a compressor or EQ on a specific drum part I can't do this with a MIDI track, so I'll create an audio track. I will then solo that specific MIDI instrument (kick, snare, hihat, etc) and record the audio output of the drum machine on the newly created audio track. Now I have all the drum parts seperated as audio tracks and have the ability to use inserts and gain control of my mix.

Please be aware that I'm still working with Logic Express. I do believe that in Logic Pro you can solo note events within the matrix editor and skip the "Demix by Note Pitch" entirely.

Please feel free to chime in with how you go about mixing your drum machine if you have another method.

I use an Elektron Machine Drum and an MPC 2500. I usually sequence them on the device using the internal sequencer of the unit and then just start sending parts to individual outputs (6 on the MD and 8 on the MPC). Then I can track up to 14 of them at once. I like the way you do yours though. I might try that at some point, too.

I use a Machinedrum and typically mix and sequence inside that itself. Once Im happy with the pattern, I record a couple of mute variations of the loop as a single stereo audio file and just edit that if need be later on. It's just a question of getting the balance right initially, then I never have to worry about it again.

The post ive been waiting for!

Guys im using Logic Pro 7.2 i sequence my beat inside the mpc then send the kick, hihat, snare to the relevant outputs but for some reason logic just doesnt sync my recording to the beat!

How do you guys all have it setup within logic?

No experience with the TD-3 and the V-kit but if it sends MIDI (which I assume it does) you can do exactly what you're talking about. You could also just play Battery using the V-Kit as the MIDI controller. Load up Battery into a selected Instrument track and bang away. Then you can change kits and samples to your hearts content.

As for syncing an MPC and Logic, I don't really ever try and do that, I guess. I work in the MPC until I want to go to Logic. Then I just record it in. Once the parts of the beat are tracked in Logic I can edit them and chop them and stretch them to my hearts content.
