both drives are, but I've always heard that when playing samples, it's better to play them from an ext firewire drive, but I think it's a pain to have to hook up an ext drive when I've got tons of space on the internal. It's a brand new 24" imac intel with 250 gig drive

its debatable. some people argue that because it can be stressful on one drive to be both the source for scratch/recording and also be streaming vst samples (especially with huge libraries like EWQL), so some argue samples should be streamed from an external drive. Personally i do recommend an external but its not going to make a huge difference either way.

also bear in mind you should never, ever fill up any drive to more than 70%, so that drive you think is 250 now (which is probably 240 after formatting) so that drive all of a sudden gives you only 170gb of storage. get yourself ivory, colossus, and symphonic orchestra and choirs and you're done on storage, so part of it is figuring out what type of vsts you'll be using, as some have small libraries, and some take up 40 gigs for one.

well I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but I'm using LE live as my main keyboard sound source, and strictly using the environment with a cableswitcher connected to audio instruments. I'm not playing back any tracks or sequencing anything (Yet)...

If you are not recording audio you don't need an external drive IMO.

When playing instruments live you may have noticed that the very first note(s) are sometimes delayed or distorted. This however has nothing to do with your drive, it's a general problem of Logic.

yes, I notice 2 things, I do get the delay on the very first note upon loading the lso file, and I also have to first go to the arrange page and select any instrument before I even have any sound at all, then I can return to the environment and proceed.

Which version of LE?

I'm using a similar setup (with channel splitter) for live playing on LE 7.2.3. If I launch LE by double-clicking the .lso file, I need to start the sequencer to get any sound. However, if I launch LE first and then open the .lso file I get sound immediately without running the sequencer.

same thing here, 7.2.3. I simply open LE and it opens the last lso file, which is almost always my live setup lso.

Do you use splits live? LE doesn't let me create transformers, so i'm creating them in windows version 5.5 and importing them to the mac, but I'm not getting any sustain on anything that's split, so something in the transformer must be filtering it out

No, I don't use splits and transfomers, just channel splitter. I think that importing environment objects which are not supported in LE is quite problematic as the functionality may not be retained. Once I've tried to import a cable switcher but it didn't work as expected.
