Spiralsurfer
Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable SSD? Two weeks ago I bought a 256gb OWC 6G SSD as an internal boot drive for my MacPro, and at first it was awesome, the speed difference launching applications and overall system responsiveness was amazing. Unfortunately it soon started having problems with freezing at random times, hanging on shut down and failing to mount. Long story short, I'm sending it back for a refund as the errors and freezing just became worse and worse, even after reformatting the drive and reinstalling the system - even that took three attempts due to errors before completing successfully! I'm a little wary of buying another OWC SSD now, even though I was probably just unlucky and got a dud drive the first time. Does anyone have experience with other brands? I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro with a 256gb Apple factory SSD (Samsung I think) and that has always worked flawlessly, so that could be a good option. Any other recommendations? David Nahmani
The Samsung 840 and 840 EVO are quality SSD drives. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/about/SSD840EVO.html

epiano
Hello guys, What is the difference between Evo and no-Evo SSD ? I mean - will there be any difference in Mac Pro 2010 standard SATA (250) ? greetings.
David Nahmani
Evo is a newer model. According to Samsung it is more performant. I haven't tested them, but if there is, indeed, a difference, then you'll benefit from it even in your 2010 Mac Pro. Having said that, chances that the difference between the 840 and the 840 EVO is much more marginal than the difference between a HDD and a SSD. Spiralsurfer
After doing a bit of online research and wading through a ton of reviews, I decided to order a Samsung 840 Pro, more than enough for my current model MacPro and handy for any future use as well. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this one than the OWC SSD!

Gosh, I'm sorry to read that you had a bad experience with an OWC SSD. I say this because, throughout recent years, I've invested a good chunk of change in their drives (Both HDDs and SSDs) as well as their enclosures. I did have one bad enclosure once. Their service team was very responsive and I was able to send it back and receive a new, dependable one at no extra cost. I have heard horror stories with SSDs in general, including how they tend to slow up if TRIM isn't enabled or if they don't manage the data well. So far, I've experienced no problems with an OWC SSD and have been recommending them because they have been dependable for me. I have two 480 GB SSDs in my Early 2009 MacPro, with one as my system drive. Both are performing well now as they did when I first installed them several months ago. Actually, I have three internal SSDs in my MacPro with the third one being the PCIe-based Mercury Accelsior_E2 SSD (used to house additional instrumental libraries). That Mercury Accelsior E2 drive is blazing fast (and I do wish the other internal SSDs were just as fast). I'm saving my pennies to purchase a second one for video-editing purposes. It seems that none of the OWC products are cheap, though. If another brand proves to be as dependable as the OWC brand (which has been my only experience, so far), then it seems smart to purchase that other brand. But I am surprised to read that you did have a bad experience with an OWC SSD. I guess nothing in life is totally dependable. Hope my OWC SSDs are good for the next few years because they ain't cheap!! (They're warranties are good, though. Hope they gave you no hassle as you held them accountable to their warranty for the failing SSD.)
Spiralsurfer
Hi efiebke, It's just bad luck with that OWC SSD I think, must have had a defective cell or something. I decided to go with a different brand mainly because I could source it locally here in Melbourne easily rather than having to wait for a return and exchange from OWC, which could take two weeks or more. I'm sure most of them work just fine Still, I have no desire to risk a repeat just in case the replacement comes from the same bad batch or something! They had no problem with me sending it back for a full refund, though I did have to pay $20 for return shipping. Their tech support and customer service seems pretty good so far at least. cnse
So far I've had good results with my OWC Mercury Pro. I've been using it for about 8 months. This is in contrast to my previous Super Talent SSD (installed by previous owner of the mac) which I would not recommend (updating the faulty firmware required transplanting into a PC, drive had frequent errors then failed completely.) Spiralsurfer
Just a quick update on the SSD upgrade for anyone else considering different brands - the Samsung 512GB 840 Pro SSD I installed is great, working flawlessly since installation. It has made a massive difference to my aging MacPro, feels like a new Mac again so I recommend the upgrade, it's well worth it!
