Yuletide Minstrel

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

I thought I would finally get around this year to recording this song. I hope some at least will enjoy it. Comments welcome!.

This is a song Leigh wrote in December 2011. Composition is simple with acoustic guitar, vocals. Irish flute is courtesy of my Yamaha Motif XF8. I tried to capture the atmosphere of a medieval hall.

Edit : Fixed per help from Camillo and Buc, thanks.

Nice composition and a nice song!

Some small issues:

- I would definitely change the electric guitar with an acoustic sounding one

- Lower the vocal (volume wise) and soften the sound (lowering the high EQ on the guitar, vocals)

I did a little ”mixing” (not having the individual tracks though) and I came up with this (EQ-ing the high/mid range)

Plugins used:

- Tonebooster EQ

- BT Stereo Imager ST2S-3

- X-Noise (s)

- SPL De-Esser

- Maag EQ4

- L3 LL Multi (s)

- LinEQ Broadband (s)

- C1 Compressor

- L3 Ultramaximixer

DELETED (AS PER REQUEST OF THE OP)

Thanks Buc, I'll listen in a moment. It's actually an acoustic guitar. A Taylor DIed in. Wife always complains.

Edit: Had a listen, the issues you hear prior to trying to change it are worse in yours, because I mucked up on DB levels at Limit. I have corrected that now. You should hear quite a difference now.

Cheers,

Tony

Listened to both versions here and I like the balance of frequencies and overall warmth of Buc's mastered version better, although to my ears there's a bit too much low mids now on the voice. (Likely a consequence of trying to beef up the guitar sound.)

@ Makzimia: I think if you had some more bottom on your guitar (and less high on your voice) it would carry over better. Nice song and delivery but thin sounding overall. That acoustic really should be mic'd! Plus, your guitar sounds over compressed.

Camillo,

Thank you, while I am trying for a particular sound, it's obvious my speakers tell me a different story in my environment than you two hear at least. For me, I have to turn Buco's version down, compared to mine, and mine is set using a DB meter for listening level as well. After listening to his version based off my first *master* it definitely over done ( for the genre) but definitely has more mid and bottom (warmer). To me it makes it muddier than I wanted, but I will indeed go back and lower the high end.

Stay tuned after the weekend probably for any significant change.

Thanks,

Tony

It drove me crazy, realized I was suffering tired ears. Got the wife to listen to Bucs version, agreed it was *warmer* if distorted, because of my bad work before it anyway... so... I went back took on board what you said, and did a total remix back to give more bottom end overall and mids.

Thanks,

Tony

Wow, HUGE difference between the new mix and the old! Ok, now I can say it: (since you have wrought such a remarkable transformation on that mix ;) ) your old mix hurt my ears but the new one is head and shoulders over what you had; you even made the DI'd acoustic sound waaay more acoustic. And the vocal is warm and it's lost it's "shred" factor. Nice 'verb on the voice too!

Indeed the new mix is such a (positive) difference as the ”harsh” high levels are now gone and you have definitely improved the mix!

Regarding my ”effort”: the mid range was a bit over the top, but that happened due to me having to tone down the high levels on the guitar. As I did not have the individual tracks (to work on them separately) my effort was just merely an indication on how to ”warm up” the song.

Buc I appreciate yours and Camillos input :). It's what had me go back later in the day. As I did say, you started with a dud version to begin with. I got the idea of what you were doing though :).

Very glad the new version hit the spot.

Thanks,

Tony
