as far as "preparing a track for recording" from pages 63-64. i select create audio track but then i hear nothing when i should hear the guitar thats plugged in. should i be creating an audio track or should i be clicking on guitar or bass? selecting audio is doing nothing for me. what have i done wrong?

Go to preferences>audio Is your focusrite selected as your input device? Does it show up as an option? What is your output device set to?

If it is the input device, make sure your input on your audio track is set to whichever input your guitar is plugged into.

If the focusrite is the output device, are you sure your speakers are setup correctly? Can you hear other audio from logic?

Did you arm the track for recording?

i now plugged into the other available input on my usb audio interface. it seems to sort of work.all inputs are correct and i am armed for recording. this audio interface has been nothing but problems. i talked to the employees where i bought it about the problems with it and they are blaming the mavericks updates. anyone else having the same problems?

it seems to sort of work.

What exactly do you mean? Are you getting a signal?

Make sure the audio channel you are setting up for your guitar is mono. Then set the input under I/O on the channel strip to the same input that you are plugged into on the focusrite? There should be 2 options input 1 or input 2. Once you get this sorted, do you see a signal coming up on the channel strip? Do you hear anything?

I can't speak to the scarlet 2i2 but I would check to make sure your signal flow is correct before assuming it doesn't work. Did you follow the advice of the folks on your other post to check to see if it is working? ie "does it show up in logic's prefs? the audio/midi app???"

Ok, so one input works, you're getting sound, all good, right?

Are you now trying to figure out how to get the second input to work? If so, there are a few steps to take for trouble shooting...

1) Is 'inst' selected on your focusrite?

2) Is the gain turned up?

3) Is input 2 selected on the channel strip I/O?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then it may be a problem with the input of your focusrite.

Hope this helps.
