Need More Midi Tracks in ARIA

Recommended Posts

Yes I am. I'm using 16 midi tracks for all the instruments. The drums are on their own midi channel (1 track) and I want to be able to raise or lower the volume on each of the drums, snare, bass drum, cymbals etc. So how do I create more "tracks" for the drums. That's my question. Or for that matter, create more tracks for any other instrument if I need them. By the way, I'm using Logic Express which shouldn't really matter.

Thanks.

Hi there

You are using Aria at this point to record midi, correct? You need to set each channel in Aria's mixer to send to a different midi channel. Then in Logic you create an instrument track which you set to midi channel 1. Then choose from Logic's Arrange page local menu "New track with next midi channel" (or something like that--I don't have it in front of me right now) which will automatically create a track set to midi channel 2, and on and on. Now when you record you will have each of the instruments recording to separate tracks. Altering the volumes of various instruments while you play you can be done from within the Aria mixer.

Jim,

I already have the set up you're describing in Logic and Aria. Since "all" the drums are on one midi channel, what I want is more midi channels just for the drums. Now since there are only 16 midi channels to work with, which I already have filled up with other instruments, I know there is a way of creating more ARIA instances. Instances is the word they use to open up more ARIA's and when you do this you can use as many drums as you want.

I read about this on the MakeMusic website, but since the people there are not familiar with Logic, they were not able to help me.

I need to know how to create these "instances".

In the manual they don't explain how to do this, they just tell you what can be done.

I hope I explained myself clearly. If you need more information please let me know.

Thanks.

Oh, I see now. I cannot specifically help you with that as I've never had to use more than the 16 midi channels. Could you not just create a second Aria/GPO instrument track specifically for the drums and run that at the same time as the original instrument which could carry the strings, brass, etc?

Hi Jim, I'm back.

You nailed it!!. That's exactly what I wanted by adding another instrument track. This will definitely give me more midi tracks.

It seems so obvious and I couldn't get it. Thankx.

So now the question I have is this: Is there a way, other than the way you just suggested, to have one midi channel, say for the drums, and have multi "tracks" where you can put the bass drum on one, the snare on one, the cymbals on one and control them individually without each track being affected by the other? Kind of like having all of them on separate midi channels, but only on separate tracks. If it would be possible to do this I wouldn't have to open up all the instances of ARIA player.

By the way, I'm using Garritan JABB3 which doesn't matter in terms of what we're talking about.

Hey there--Glad that worked out for you.

I understand what you're trying to accomplish. I record with Toontrack's EZDrummer. All the drums play to a single MIDI region. However, EZDrummer's mixer allows you to assign each drum to a different output. That means that when I record the midi to audio tracks each drum has it's own channel. With the Aria player you can assign each instrument (horns, strings, etc) to a different channel, but I don't think you can break down the drum kit that way. Logic may, however, offer you a workaround. Try this:

1. Create a separate instance of Aria just for your drums, since you're going to require multiple midi channels (one for each drum/cymbal).

2. Record something. Now open that midi region. Each drum/cymbal is mapped to a different note. So now...

...follow the link below to Logic 9's manual and read the section "To assign individual note pitches to different MIDI channels." I've never made use of this function but it seems to be what you're looking to accomplish.
