Channel input meter reads lower level than it records

Recommended Posts

I have read over the various documents concerning digital audio levels versus analogue, but I'm not sure I quite understand what is happening while tracking my first project.

I am aiming to keep the level of my input, reading -18db RMS on the channel strip meter. However, when I play back the recorded material, with the fader at 0db, the level plays back significantly hotter than -18db RMS.

Am I doing something wrong, or am I just not grasping the concept of input vs. playback audio levels?

No plugins. Recorded some vocals with my Firepod into Logic X. The channel strip meter indicated a roughly -18db RMS signal with peaks around -6db. Now on playback (again, no plugins) the signal is about -3db RMS with peaks in the red. I can't figure out what's going on.

Logic's channel strip meters only show peak dBFS values. No RMS.

Is the audio playing back at the proper speed and pitch? Can you post a screenshot of the track playing with the channel strip showing the clipping? Click this link to your signature and add your system information:

• Logic version and sub-version (e.g. Logic 10.0.5)

• OS X version and sub-version (e.g. OS 10.9.1)

• Computer (e.g. MacBook, Mac Pro, iMac)

• Processor (e.g. 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)

• Memory (e.g. 2GB)

• Audio interface manufacturer and model (e.g. Presonus AudioBox USB)

• MIDI Controller manufacturer and model (e.g. M-Audio Axiom Pro 49)

(most of that information can be found by choosing Logic Pro X > About Logic Pro X, and  > About This Mac)
