David Nahmani
Apple announced deadlines for customers who need to order the Logic 7.2 Universal crossgrade: Orders must be postmarked by June 29, 2007, and received by July 13, 2007 http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/ I know this will start a new round of speculations regarding a new Logic version, so for comparison sake take into account that the Final Cut crossgrade deadline was last december, and the new Final Cut version hasn't started shipping yet. sondod
funny i just got mine last week. it was weird though. it came in a manila envelope with no branding at all. was this how it always was?
David Nahmani
Yes, that's how they ship them.
JMC
I have a G5 dual 2 gig, and run 7.1 - I've had a 7.2 disc for months that I've never installed because it sounds like the problems of installing it outweigh the benefits. Am I wrong?
David Nahmani
In my experience 7.2.1 is the most stable release for Dual processor Power PC machines.
Subtonic
Hasn't this page always been up since the crossgrades were announced? They're just adding the dates now? I skipped 7.2 thinking that 7.3 would be out in January.
starship_blooper
just curious, but why is there a deadline? and what happens if you miss it? <
Subtonic
There's probably a deadline only to get 7.0 and 7.1 users to upgrade NOW BECAUSE IT CREATES A SENSE OF URGENCY OMIGOD!!~! It worked on me. I just upgraded to 7.2 last month. After using it I wish I upgraded a year ago. If you miss it? Probably nothing. My guess is that you'll still be able to buy the Pro crossgrade online for a while. There was one thread of a guy looking for 7.1 a while ago and managed to get a copy after calling Apple.
jannop
I think that after June 29 you can't upgrade to any new version of Logic from any other version than 7.2. Since 7.2 is a very good version it makes sense to upgrade now, to me it seems you only can upgrade to Logic 8 (or whatever it is called) from 7.2 - otherwise you need to buy the full version. Just pure speculation, though.

I don't have any inside information on that, but that doesn't make any sense, and I would be willing to bet $1,000 that you will be able to upgrade from 7.0 to 8 for the same exact price than 7.2.3 to 8. There will most probably also be an upgrade path from 6 to 8.

I agree with you, Dave, but I wonder if they would attach a $49.00 fee, making the upgrade $348.00 for us 7.1.1'ers (i just made up a new word!) I say they won't. It's pretty much standard practices in the software world to charge the same amount to all users of a previous major version. In my opinion, there will be one fixed price, say $299 (I'm pulling that number out of my... hat), for all 7.x users, and maybe a different price, say $499 for all 6.x users, and 5.x or earlier will have to buy a new license. In other news, I also predict Apple will soon release a mobile phone with touch screen interface and iPod capabilities.

David Nahmani
haha..soo, I guess you're not standing in line waiting for your iPhone, eh? I couldn't even be bothered standing in line to get free Paul Mc Cartney tickets for his show at Amoeba record the other day, I'm certainly not going to waste my time for an iPod. Some people really have too much time on their hand! I just... don't get it.
Subtonic
haha..soo, I guess you're not standing in line waiting for your iPhone, eh? I will think of this day anytime I hear someone complain that Logic Pro is too expensive. I will think of the huge amount of people waiting in line for a $500 phone and 2 year contract. David Nahmani
Yeah but you can't show Logic to your buddies at poker night, Logic is not going to spark a conversation with the cute brunette at the bar, and Logic won't allow you to prove to your friends you are right about the meaning of diaphanous or peregrination. Logic is a tool. iPhone is a status symbol. I know it's ridiculous, but that seems to be the world we leave in.
dkgross
I thought my new MPB was a status symbol Remember when the RAZR phones first came out?? Same with the iPhone (tho..the iPhone is way cooler). Give it a year..let the buzz die out a bit...it'll be cheaper, there will be more carriers, and it will still be a great device to own. the whole 2 year contract with ALL cell phone companies gripes my ass anyway...but that's for a different thread

Chris
Well, they actually did pull it from the Apple Store website. Edit: Thought they but they didn't. I did a very quick search and it didn't come up the first time.

I did a very quick search and it didn't come up the first time. And now a buddy of mine who just upgraded to Intel is being forced to pay $300 again from the LP6 upgrade if he wants to use Logic on his new (and ONLY) computer. What the hell? It ALMOST would make sense if Logic 8 was already released, but this is crazy. Richard

What the hell? It ALMOST would make sense if Logic 8 was already released, but this is crazy. Richard That's accurate. It's always been $299 in the US to upgrade to LP7 from a previous version. I hate to say it, but your buddy should have known (or at least tried to find out) that LP6 wouldn't work on an Intel based mac. That's what the whole Universal Binary thing is all about. seclusion
I grabbed the upgrade to intel Mac's when it became available before I even had an intel Mac, Why, because I always want the ability to use the latest and greatest. I was glad I did as a year and a bit later I finally grabbed an intel Mac, I would of be slightly peeved to not be able to run Logic when the MacPro arrived. Matthew Treder
I've got L7.1 and I love it, or used to. My iMac finally gave up the ghost and I bought a MacBook. Now I can't get Logic to function properly—it launches, but no plug-ins, no instruments. What's the line on 7.1 with Intel Macs? Does it run at all? I thought Rosetta was supposed to take care of this (with a performance penalty, of course). From this thread I see that Apple apparently set a hard deadline for obtaining the upgrade, yet even as a longtime registered user I didn't receive any notice of Apple's new policy by phone or email. Not that it would have helped in this case. I'd be more understanding, but Apple sold me the MacBook AND the software. Asking for $299 to make this "broken" software run on the Apple OS and Apple hardware is kind of piddley (I'm being kind here). Too, the new premium represents a 605% price hike over the previous (and, I believed, fair) price of $49, despite the fact that those who elect to pay this ransom will get less actual use out of their investment, which Apple reps tell me could be superseded by Logic 8 at any time. I already paid $900 for the retail app and $299 to move to L7. To now be asked to pay $299 to get from an x.1 to an x.2 release, with no word on whether this purchase will be future-proofed against the imminent release of L8, seems uncharacteristically un-Apple. No one I talked to at Apple could guarantee I won't be asked to shell out another $299 for L8 a month from now. I could end up having spent $598—two-thirds the retail price of the complete package—to get from Logic 7.1 (which apparently doesn't run on a modern Apple computer) to Logic 8 over the course of two months or less.
