New twist on the old '1st note of region not playing' prob

This is weird. I have EXS24 playing a drum pattern, which is a 3 bar region looped using the Loop parameter. The kick at the beginning of the original region plays ok, but the loop ones miss off the kick.

 

If I solo that channel, the kick plays every time.

 

If I copy and paste the original region, rather than using Loop, the kick still doesn't play.

 

If I then shorten each region by half a beat or so, so there's a small gap between them, then the kick plays every time, even when the whole track is playing.

 

So it seems as if Logic is having trouble playing all the tracks AND keeping up with regions that butt up against each other. It's almost as if it's treating them as overlapping and giving priority to the end of the previous region. Luckily in this case, there is nothing in the last half-beat of the region, so it's not a problem to shorten them all.

 

The system performance meter shows about half usage... any ideas why this happening?

When you look at your 3 bar region in the Matrix does it have any more notes showing after the end of the region? That might be why Logic acting as if the regions are "overlapping and giving priority to the end of the previous region". Just a guess. Does it work properly if you merge all the regions?

open the matrix and trim the last not back a little, or the first note up a some.

It's a good guess, but it's not right... There are no overlapping MIDI notes, and the key thing is that everything plays correctly when the channel is soloed. So it does seem to be a system performance issue.

also do you have the latest pro applications 4 installed?

Is there another track also playing the EXS that could be causing the trouble?

 

How many voices is the EXS set to? Is it playing Legato or Mono rather than Polyphonic?

 

Even if you just have a simple drum kit layed out GM style on the lowest keyboard octave, if you've accidently recorded some midi notes higher up which you aren't seeing on the Matrix they could be affecting performance even though they aren't playing any sounds.

Thanks for your replies guys.

 

My system is very basic - MacBook, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1 gig RAM, no external soundcards or anything. Yeah yeah, I KNOW I should get more memory! OS 10.4.9, Logic Pro 7.2.1. The only external item is a hard drive which all my audio is on.

 

I have checked, and there are no other tracks playing the EXS24. And there are no extra MIDI events in the region - it's just a simple drum machine part. There's not even any other events at the beginning of the region - just a kick!

 

I haven't downloaded the Pro Applications update, simply because I'm always worried that upgrading anything will bugger something up! Are there any known issues with it or does it seem ok?

I've just read the thread about the Pro Apps update - no-one seems to have had a problem with it yet so I'll go ahead and install it. I'd be surprised if it cures the problem but it can't hurt to try.
