Anybody using a REAL Hammond?

Recommended Posts

Drove out to look at a Hammond L-143 to put in my studio -- found on Craig's List for about the cost of getting the NI B4 :) -- but worried about the actual cost of getting it up and going sound wise. Starts up quick, all the drawbars, pedals and keys work but there's a dirty hissy wooshy sound.

...and whoa Man lots of tubes back there too and it looks like two 12"s like in my twin reverb, and some kind of internal amp that's surprisingly loud but no Leslie.

Anybody have any experience with these things?

thanx PETE

I hung on to my Hammond XK for about a year after I stopped using it...Still have my Motion Sound cabinet tho (my Triton sounds great thru it).

Between the NI B4 and the Logic EVB...well...no need for a 'real' one..

that being said..I'd love to try turning off all the 'leslie' simulations in the B4 or EV, and run it out to the Motion Sound and track that back in..that might be fun....

I missed out on that L-143 on advice from a Hammond "expert" I never met but was referred to and spoke to on the phone. Shortly after, but not quickly enough before it was sold - my regular guitar amp repair guy said that basically he could fix up any all tube version, or find me another guy who could.

Just found another model L-100 series which I'm driving out to see tonite.

Hey sure the EVB3 and that are cool too but if I can get this happening...

Whoo hoo! ..and Dave after seeing that picture of that tube collection of yours I'm thinking there may already be a hammond or two in there, too!

Hey man i have a j100

Nice! Today I picked up (tomorrow morning delivery!) a Hammond M-101 with 3 internal speakers and a Leslie 25 -- it's configured so you can play through either or both speaker systems at the same time (They call this "Echo" on the half moon connector kit control switch).

I know it's a long shot but anybody want to suggest a mic method?

I'm anticipating maybe doing something along the lines of the way I do my guitar amps with a condenser in back and a 57 in front- splitting a stereo track up that way...

I recently recorded a Hammond C3 at my church last week, straight into a 002 Rack with Logic Pro on a powerbook G4.

I used a Neumann U47 FET for the bottom of the leslie

and an AKG C414 for the top.

I also threw in an ADK A-48 Valve about 3ft from the leslie to get some of the room.

Results are remarkable and I haven't finished mixing it yet.

Here's a coupla pix of my "new" baby. Look in back and you'll see the 2x12"s and 1x8" speakers.

BONUS: There's an RCA "in" on the amp just left of the left most 12" which allows me to plug my guitar in and play through the hammonds internal main and reverb amps (behind spring reverb tank) and speakers PLUS the Leslie and it's amp. Pretty cool and different guitar sounds... haven't got around to recording that yet...or even the organ itself, but I'm stopping to write this and set up some mics now.

Just loving playing the hammond esp.digging the bass pedals...wish it had another octave or more of those but will make do

Nope, no autochords on this one... the M-101 a.k.a. Baby "B" is the model Billy Preston plays with the Beatles in Let It Be (the movie) also reportedly appears on the recordings of "Green Onions", "Hocus Pocus" by Focus and "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procul Harum. Although it has many of the same features and sounds as the B3, like split Scanner Vibrato and Percussion it has only one octave of pedals, only one set of drawbars per manual and weighs only about 250 lbs. vs. about 500!

The "light" weight explains why you'll see shots of Booker T. & The MGs playing it live, and why they chose to drag it up on the roof of Abbey Road studios.

My aunt has that one lol. Its the autochord one very nice!
