Most of you know about the MFreeEffectsBundle by MeldaProduction. But they recently added a free multi-comb filter plugin called MComb. It's a great little plugin with 2 modulators. And like the rest of their freeware, it's also 32/64bit. It's included in the free effects bundle - http://www.meldaproduction.com/plugins/product.php?id=MFreeEffectsBundle

Boz Digital Labs have 2 free plugins to offer. The first is called Bark of Dog and is aimed at improving that all-important low-end in a mix. The other plugin is called Panther Stereo Manipulation, and the name pretty much describes what it does. Both effects, especially the Panther effect, have great GUIs.

I haven't had a chance to use them yet, but the person who told me to check them out seems to like the way they sound, even if their functionality overlaps with other effects out there. Here's the link - http://bozdigitallabs.com/shop/

For those of you who are still using Mac OS 10.6.8, you can get the full version of Cakewalk's Rapture Synthesizer for free, which is included on the DVD that comes with Computer Music Magazine's 200th issue. So technically it's not 'freeware' because you have to buy the magazine. But I consider it fairly inexpensive taking into account how much content, samples, and plugins you get.

Just to be clear… Rapture will only work with Mac 10.6.8 and lower. It will NOT work with Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Here are the details: http://www.cakewalk.com/products/rapture/ I hope at least a few of you get a chance to use this synth. Just wanted to give you a heads-up!! :)

I've got it working with Mavericks and latest Logic Pro version.

I remember having to install in Tiger and then edit a file to make it work in Lion and Mountain Lion (I'll try to find the details I was sent by a Calkwalk technician). I'm also using 32Lives to use it in the latest version of Logic Pro.

Cheers, P.

^ Nice, I'm so glad that you're getting some use out of it. I never owned Rapture but was told by many others that it was a fantastic-sounding synth. That would be really cool if you would be willing to explain step by step how you've got it running on OS's that are supposed to be incompatible.

When I mentioned that you could only use Rapture on 10.6.8 or lower, I was simply quoting the system requirements that were posted by both Cakewalk and Computer Music. If there is indeed a workaround, I do know that neither company claims to support it or guarantee it will work.

If you guys do decide to use it, it's nice to know that it's both 32/64bit compatible. You can download some free expansion packs here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/20067171 Or you can go here: http://rekkerd.org/patches/plug-in/rapture/ Or here: http://www.kvraudio.com/banks.php?s=list&product=2123&order=date

There is a high-quality expansion line available from Galbunum: http://www.galbanum.com/products/piscis/ and http://www.galbanum.com/products/secondcoming/ They also offer Architecture Waveforms which includes 2,500 designed wavetables in wav. format. The amount of possible sounds that can be designed using these complex waveforms is stunning. They can be found here: http://www.galbanum.com/products/architecturewaveforms-ce/ Also, I was told that SFZ patches can also be played in Rapture.

I know this synth may be dated, but I'm of the mindset that with a little creativity and some time, you can make any synthesizer sound relevant to today's music. Take care!! :)

This was sent to me to get Rapture working on Mountain Lion.

"Basically I'm going to give you the steps for how to move your installation from your Leopard install to your Lion system. This assumes you have Rapture 1.2.2 (latest from Cakewalk) currently installed on a 10.6 system to copy from.

You just have to make sure that you copy the folders over to their respective locations on your new system:

- Rapture Content:

HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/

Rapture Content

(standalone and documentation)

HD/Applications/Cakewalk/Rapture

- Audio Unit:

HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Rapture.component

- Registry/Preferences/License:

(Rapture 1.2.2 plist)

HD/Library/Preferences/com.cakewalk.rp.plist

(Rapture 1.2.1 plist it's here only if you installed older version of Rapture)

HD/Library/Preferences/com.cakewalk.Rapture.plist

(super secret keyfile where your serial/reg combo is stored)

HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.inetdserv.plist

All of these files and folders if duplicated on your new system will replicate a complete installation. Also on your Lion system make sure that your library "Get Info" on all of these files and folders and give everyone Read & Right Privilege."

I infact moved the installation files from Tiger to Mountain Lion. I'm using 32Lives to get it working in Mavericks. I haven't used it extensively so I don't know how stable it is but it's enough to use it usefully.

Good luck.

I've been back to the Crystal download page to try to get the extra patches.

At the website it suggests this method for installation:

>>On OSX, put the CrystalPatchBanks folder into the /Users//Library/Application Support/Crystal folder. (On OSX 10.7 and above, to locate the Library folder in the Finder: hold the Option key while selecting Library from the Finder's Go menu). <<

I've searched for the Crystal folder and I can't find it. I think I've thoroughly searched my system for it, to no avail...

Can anyone suggest why this might be?

Crystal is working within my LPX.

This isn't a plug-in, but I hope a collection of sample packs isn't out of the way.

http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1200140

A kind soul over at the Newgrounds forum has uploaded his entire (free, legal) Soundfont collection, one that presumably took quite a while to collect. They are in SF2 format but Plogue's player converts them perfectly. I've tried them all and they're really good for free. There are also some comparatively rare instruments, and a couple solo violins(been looking for violins for so long) which sound very good indeed. They fill in the gaps in the EXS24 library pretty well.

Eventide is offering their amazing 64bit UltraChannel for free until midnight July 8, 2014 :

"UltraChannel™ is Eventide's new 64-bit native channel strip plug-in for AU, VST, and AAX64 for Mac and PC featuring micro pitch functionality from our flagship H8000, stereo delays with variable feedback paths, plus two stages of compression, gating, and five bands of parametric EQ. UltraChannel is available as a free download through midnight July 8, 2014, after which it will cost $249.

UltraChannel features a pair of dynamics processors: the O-Pressor™, capable of extreme compression (this is the compressor section of the Omnipressor®) and a conventional compressor with de-essing and side-chain capability.

UltraChannel™ also offers Soft-Saturation, and Transformer emulation which recreates transformer core saturation. This feature adds harmonics to low frequency material while remaining relatively transparent to the rest of signal. While relatively subtle, in aggregate, Transformer can bring life to otherwise dull mixes and help glue disparate sound sources together.

FlexiPath™ routing allows drag and drop for reordering the signal path of the top level components (O-Pressor, compressor/de-esser, EQ, Gate).

UltraChannel includes a variety of factory presets tailored to signal sources such as guitar, bass, kick drum, snare, piano, strings, synths and vocals. A number of the presets were created by Eventide artists.

UltraChannel does not require you to own or use an iLok dongle, but the iLok License Manager and an ilok.com account are required to use the plugin. An ilok.com account can be created either at ilok.com or within the iLok License Manager application."

This is a great offer and one of the few times I would be willing to install anything PACE-related on my Mac. I hope you will find a good use of this freeware. Here's the link: http://eventideplugins.elasticbeanstalk.com/ultrachannel.jsp You can use 0F736710 for your coupon code.

I don't know if it's my favorite, but it's new and I like it.

Squashit multiband distortion:

http://klevgrand.se/squashit/

I think it sounds great, and the gui couldn't be more straightforward. It's also been absolutely stable for me, there was only a component to place in the folder, no installer. You have to give an email address to get the download link.

I think it excels at subtle to moderate distortion, adds punch or crispness. I hope they make a pro version. Nice plugin.

Yes, this is very straight forward and after only a few uses, I'm finding it useful on bass lines and vocals that need to be dirtied up to cut through my mix. Thanks :)

For those of you that use the free plugins that come with every issue of Computer Music magazine, you might be happy to hear that some of their better AU's such as u-he Zebra CM, Synapse Audio Dune CM, Vengeance Sound Philta CM and LiquidSonics Reverberate CM are now 64-bit and ready to be used with Logic Pro X.

Sinevibes is offering their 32/64bit Turbo effect plugin for free (normally $19) until December 18th -

"Turbo is an effect offering a unique sound manipulation technology. It takes the input signal and directly bends its shape using one of its eight sine-based transfer functions, vastly enriching the spectral content with new harmonics. Moreover, all the vibrations and beatings in the original signal are emphasised and create wobbling, growling or even screaming effects. Combined with separate filters on both the input and the output, Turbo allows you to turn any simple sound into a completely new, rich textures with incredible density and character."

:D :D :D

Just updated them! Dune CM is awesome!

CM seriously gives some great free plug-ins (well okay, about 5 bucks for the magazine, but you only need one issue)

Tokyo Dawn Labs has some really nice free plugins.

  • Proximity is a ... distance simulator of some sort. I'm still messing with it.
VOS Slick EQ is a nice-sounding EQ with lots of options regarding curve shape.
Feedback Compressor is a good compressor, but I'm really enjoying their other compressor,
Kotelnikov, which just came out not too long ago. Kotelnikov is super transparent and several GS members are using it for mastering.

Another developer who works with them is Vladg sound. He has several free plugins (which may have already been mentioned here, sorry if that's the case). The Molot compressor is something I'm really having fun with lately.
