Sound Card/Getting Started

Ok, so this is a basic quesion, but I am entirely new to Logic.

I recently installed a copy on my MacBook, and am trying to figure out the absolute minum setup I will need to get sound out of the program. I currently have no sound and am assuming I need a sound card to be able to play the apple loops available through Logic. I am also assuming that once I can operate the Apple loops, I will be able to create some very basic music. So basically, I am wondering...

1) Do I need a sound card

2) I thought a computer just came with a sound card, but that doesn't seem to be the case...am I right?

3) Once I have a sound card, shouldn't I be able to use the Apple Loops that come with Logic?

I appreciate any help,

Nathan

No - you can use your Mac's built-in audio facilities.

2) I thought a computer just came with a sound card, but that doesn't seem to be the case...am I right?

Every Mac has a built-in 'sound card'. Are you getting any sound out of the built-in speakers? Have you accidentally muted sound output? Some of the function keys control sound volume/mute

3) Once I have a sound card, shouldn't I be able to use the Apple Loops that come with Logic?

You can use the fully functionality of all audio app's - including AppleLoops and all plug-ins - without buying an external soundcard.

All that an external soundcard would give you is possibly more discrete inputs and outputs, and potentially higher sound quality.

I appreciate any help,

Nathan

That's the weird thing. The speakers on my computer are definitely on. I'm getting sound through them, but I haven't been able to get any sound out of Logic. I've been experimenting with bringing in Apple Loops...dragging in the audio files...there are track meters that are moving...indicating that there should be sound, I would think, but I can't hear anything.

Yeh I've had friends this has happened to as well. I forgot what the solution was but I have a feeling it has something to do with running the setup assistant again and checking the the core audio is being used in the audio prefs.
