Inquiry for UAD-1 users

I run a Mac Pro 2.66. Recently I have been plagued by "system overload" errors. I've been on the search to figure out what exactly kept pushing me over the edge. My first thought was that it must be all the Waves plug-ins I use or lack of RAM. So I added 4Gb of Ram and that did absolutley nothing to help. Next I took particular projects that were really overloading and proceeded to take all my 3rd party plugs off. Mostly Waves plugs, IR-1, L3, LL3... This also didn't help. Finally the only thing left was my UAD plug-ins. Well oddly enough it was my UAD card that was causing Logic to "system overload". I couldn't believe it because the whole reason I initially purchased UAD was to help out my computer's CPU. I figured out that I can only run my 2 UAD cards at around 58-65% without causing sytem overload. I messed around with limiting the UAD cards usage at 99% or not limiting it at all. That didn't help in being able to use more processing power.

So finally my question for UAD users: How far can you push your card(s) percentage-wise before you get "system overload" or the UAD card itself will tell you it is going to overload? I'm wondering if there are issues with Mac Pro's and using the UAD card? If you're running a G5 can you push the card more than Mac Pro users? I just figure I should be able to push my cards a bit more. I'm happy to use my collection of Waves plug-ins and some Logic plugs (my Mac Pro can more than handle them) but I absolutely love using my UAD plug-ins. I guess I can always buy 2 more cards but I'm trying not to buy any new equipment for as long as I can hold out...

Right after I posted my message that was the first thing that came to mind. I updated my computers firmware and updated my UAD from 4.5 to 4.6. I was hopeful but it still didn't help. I'm assuming from your reply that you're able to push your cards more than what I'm experiencing?

Here's a shot with 17 plugs goimg. A few big ones like Cambridge eq, Neve compressors, Multibands, etc. So, you can see, it is quite possible. If I go higher than this it gets hairy though, and it starts to impact Logic if I'm already topping out a few of the Macs processors too.

I'm over joyed and love my UAD plugs again!

After several calls and talking to a few people at UAD I've figured things out.

First person told me to change my buffer size in Logic to 1024, didn't help. So crazy as I am, I went out and bought a third card, figured maybe that would help and it didn't. Now I was really annoyed. Another $400 bucks spent...

Finally I realized that one of my cards was taking all the load and the others were barely at 12% or even lower. So the basic Single Meter said it was at 46% but one card was really running around 89%. After talking to someone at UAD, I was told to select the option to disengage DSP usage by bypassing and manually bypass all plugs, then engage the larger plug-ins first, forcing the plugs that use more DSP to process first. This sort of forced the cards to share the load. If you ad a huge hog of a plug like the Neve 33609 after your cards are already running a bunch of other plugs, resources won't be re-allocated evenly. However if you enage the 33609 first (since it uses about 60% of a single card) the other smaller plug-ins will fall in place around it and resources will be allocated more evenly between cards. I read the manual again and couldn't find anything in there regarding this, so maybe it's commonly known but not by me at least. Anyway, things are running great now! Gotta get back to working on a mix... yea :D
