external instruments in LE

i know that in logic you should be able to select external instrument under the I/O of an audio instrument's channel strip and get the sounds of a hardware synth as well as the midi editing posibilites, but does this feature exist in LE? coz the external instrument option doesn't appear under audio instruments I/O for me... do you have to set up the hardware synth in the environment first or something? If so, how do you do this?

Edit: LE comes without the external instruments feature, its all in the comparisons chart, which i of course should have looked at first. bummer.
