  1. Hello everyone, Here's a link to my new video from my album "Or'ange Sunshine and other songs"........As I posted before this album was completely produced in the box on a cheese grater Mac and Logic Pro 10.3.3 running El Capitan, both are of the most stable versions Apple has put out in my experience. And still very plugin compatable even in 2022!!! https://rumble.com/vrth3q-shot-in-the-arm.html give a watch and listen and tell me what ya think...................
  2. Hey everybody, I'm posting a link to the title track of my new album "Or'ange Sunshine" and other songs. It was written performed mixed produced and mastered solely and completely by myself, in the box, on my cheese grater Mac Pro 8 core, running Logic Pro 10.3.3 , Plugin Alliance and UAD2 plugins, and mastered with Ozone 9 advanced. I think it turned out quite nicely, please give a listen and let me know what you think..
  3. Thanks @robinloops, I appreciate your reply, did you ever run 10.4.8 on High Sierra? Most definitely will save a back up of 10.3.3 to be sure, just trying to see whether it's really worth going to a new machine AND os, when I don't know if that os will run latest Logic smoothly or not.
  4. Hello to all, I have a dilemma of sorts. I have the opportunity to upgrade from my current 3,1 8 core cheese grater which is running perfectly with Logic 10.3.3 and El Capitan, to a 5,1 12 core cheese grater mac pro and the ability to run Logic 10.4.8 on High Sierra. The price for the 12 core is very affordable for me at this time, however I would need to add RAM and SSD storage, etc. My 8 core has 32gb RAM and plenty of storage, and dual quad core 3.2ghz processors, the 12 core has the dual six core 2.93ghz processors. To me the main attraction to the 12 core is the added horsepower and ability to update to the latest version of Logic. My dilemma is whether the 10.4.8 version has all the bugs worked out and is as stable on High Sierra as 10.3.3 is on El Capitan. I might add that I have yet to max out the limits of my 8 core mac where power is concerned, I am at the end of updating it without hacks though. I guess where I am most unsure about upgrading to 10.4.8 on High Sierra is if there are still several bugs/issues with this version, I'm not at all sure that High Sierra will continue to be supported on 10.4.9 or 10.5.0. Which would leave me with a potentially bug riddled version of Logic, I can't fix or update, in which case I would be better off staying where I'm at on 10.3.3 and El Capitan. There would still be the increase in power/speed on the newer mac, just not much of anything else. I would very much like to hear from anyone running H.S. and 10.4.8 or any other insights you might have on this.
  5. Just from reading the thread and the various replies, I'm puzzled as to how there would be anything to download from the Apple site other than 1, the additional content for Logic Pro X, or 2, the latest version of Logic Pro X....My copy of Logic Studio came with the Logic install dvd (white disk), 3 Audio Content dvds (black disks), 3 Jam Pack Content dvds (black disks), 1 Demo Content dvd (black disk), and 1 dvd labeled Additional Content (black disk). Here's the thing, at the time I was installing Logic Studio, installing all the additional content was next to impossible to do directly from the disks themselves. After 3 days of trying everything I could think of or find online, I stumbled across a thread here on Logic Pro Help, in which Jordi Torres, suggested making disk images of each dvd and installing from from those, that was the ONLY way I was able to install everything. The problem apparently was during the install process the installer has to reference the install disk as part of installing the other disks, so the install would get so far and then fail because I couldn't swap out disks fast enough in order to keep the install going. Making disk images of all the disks allowed me to mount them all at one time. My point in all this is, If the Logic Pro 9 additional content was available as a download from Apple it was a very well kept secret, in which I've never heard of anyone else knowing about it. Just a thought, but is it possible that somehow when you start the install, (assuming your computer is online), that initially the installer is "seeing" the additional content for Logic Pro X being offered from the Apple site and it starts to download and install it until it gets to the point, it recognizes it's content for a different version and therefore incompatable???? Just a thought, hope it helps shed some light on the issue.
  6. I understand where you're coming from @fisherking, and the domain you're working in. I am more of a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist artist, dealing with my own compositions and performances, rather than other artists or the public. So I am more focused on getting my mixes and the sounds of my recordings on par with what's been commercially successful and acclaimed within the genres I work in, which are blues, blues/classic rock, country, and Americana. Like I said in earlier posts I'm still learning as I go, as far as mastering with Ozone 9 goes, and I haven't yet myself tried loading a reference track into Ozone 9's mastering assistant either, but I do make use of having a track or tracks loaded in Logic for referencing and A/Bing with my tracks as I record and mix. So the option of being able to load a reference track into Ozone's mastering assistant is definitely something that appeals to me personally. I would like to get a better understanding of how to work within Ozone 9 and it's tonal balance control while utilizing Neutron and Nectar as well.
  7. I totally agree on the benefits, even necessity of coming to a mixing or mastering session with "fresh" ears. Ear fatigue is definitely something to be aware of and avoid when trying to make "sound decisions" ...pun intended. As to using reference tracks, I was indeed referring to the use of tracks on CD, Vinyl, Disk drives, even tape, drawn from one's own listening library, was my assumption, however I guess there would be quite a few that only have mp3's as a "library", in which case I could see reluctance to use such as a strict blueprint, but in the more general sense of the word "reference" tracks are a great help, if in only terms of being used for comparison between your project and a mix or master of a track, that really stands out as a high standard or bar to shoot for, in this context, don't we all use reference tracks?? at least mentally anyway???
  8. sometimes i take a day or two away from a project, then master. but, often, i dive right in.. because i know exactly how i want the work to sound... an 'enhancement' of my mix... and am excited to head towards that. but whatever works. i agree, distance is valuable, gives us perspective.... Do you ever use reference tracks? Especially within the confines of Ozone 9 and Tonal Balance Control, there's the option of loading reference tracks that are near the target of the master you're going for, that Mastering Assistant will make adjustments for to get your mix in the ball park at least, then it's like chili, just season to taste....
  9. IDK, but I'm pretty sure being slightly mad is a prerequisite to doing anything arts/music/audio related, lol.
  10. Well @fisherking, I don't begin to say I have as comparable chops behind the mixing or mastering desk, as you do. But, I've been working at it for good while now, within the scope of being a singer/songwriter/artist/recordist for my own music. What you posted about this subject is pretty much the way I've been working and using Logic/Ozone myself, for the material I submit to Taxi, etc. I'm glad to know I'm at least maybe on the right track. I know from following a similar workflow as yours, I'm seeing and hearing improvement all the time, in the quality of my mixes and resulting masters, simply by using Logic and Ozone in tandem with each other, I'm able to hear and catch things that might otherwise get by me, which is a total game changer in itself!!
  11. Hi everybody, Does anyone have any experience/pointers for using Jam Origin Midi Guitar 2, with UA Apollo interface in Logic ? I just bought it and would like to find out the best setup and routing for using it to record midi into Logic thru my Apollo interface. Any tips would be very welcome, thanks. http://www.jamorigin.com/
  12. Hi all, Happy New Year, I know this is probably a total newbie question but can anyone tell me how in the heck to convert an audio loop or clip into a midi file in Logic 10.3.3 ? I been going around in circles for a few hours now and I can't seem to get it to work. It's basically one measure of an audio drum beat that I'm wanting to convert and so far it has proved to be totally beyond my grasp....help please !!!!
  13. LOL...@Eriksimon...but I feel I must speak to your "horrid American piece of 'culture' " reference, I promise it's not mine or the majority of Americans' "culture", but, rather a greed based ploy used by the international BANKSTERS to enslave the globe and cause havoc and chaos.....which is precisely why I practice the hallowed and civilized tradition of CYBER MONDAY instead....just saying
  14. I too spent more than I intended on UAD2 plugs, but I got some killer deals on Capitol Chambers, Ampex ATR 102, Fatso Jr/Sr/ Tape Sim, and the new Avalon VT-737 channel strip, plus a mint used UAD2 DUO PCIe card for a little more DSP.... now I just have to pay off my charge cards.....
  15. Great thread, wouldn't type of compression play a big part too, for example, I tend to favor eq > compression, if its limiting or a leveling amp i.e. LA-2A etc., if I'm using a multi-band comp, I will likely eq before and after, with the after eq just for tweaking in a shimmer.. would love to hear any thoughts on this.
  16. Just want to chime in and say thanks David and team for all the help and hard work you do on this site. I also want to add that one of the reasons I stay with Logic Pro X, is because of the forums and community on this site, I know that there is a vast wealth of knowledge gathered here, that I've got access to solely because this site exists....thanks again !!
  17. I would definitely recommend the Manley VoxBox channel strip, possibly the Chandler Curve Bender, or the Manley Massive Passive EQ, and, if you don't already own it, the LA-2A collection, and I would certainly jump on the Capitol Chambers while you can get it for $100 as part of the 3 plus 1 bundle. But in the end, those are my picks, you know better than anybody what speaks to your own tastes, however the ones I mentioned are definitely tools you can get a lot of use from to be sure.
  18. Yep, Apple is going to do, 1, what it thinks will make money, 2, what they think they can get get away with, 3, try to convince their customers and public at large we have no choice/can't live without them and their products.....we on the other hand can speak with our wallets and eventually even Apple will have to listen, especially when all they see their sales take a dive...
  19. Well said my friend. I'm on a 3,1 8 core right now, and to be honest the only reason I'm considering moving into a 5,1 2.93 or 3.06ghz 12 core this fall, is because I'm starting to see some being sold for really good prices, and that's the Mac Pro I've been salivating over for almost 8 years. That said though my 3,1 3.2ghz 8 core is kicking butt with the use of my Apollo FW interface, I could probably stay on it for few more years running Logic X 10.3.3 and not have any issues except software not supporting El Capitan anymore, which I know that's coming, but right now I'm sitting pretty good on plugins, etc., Logic 10.4.4 on High Sierra on a 5,1 that's tricked out with 64gb ram and 4or5 tb storage, is something I can wait a little while longer for, if need be, but I'll decide on that Oct-Nov.
  20. So do you have a specific plan to build a full "hackintosh" from the ground up or just modifying your 5,1 ? And have you heard or considered the fact Apple is likely to base future OS's on or around the T2 chip, which will effectively brick all non T2 machines from going forward update wise? Not saying Catalina is or will be T2 only, as it's probably intended as a transition OS at this point, but the writing's on the wall, which is the main reason for this thread, in the first place.
  21. I certainly understand and share your feelings concerning "Update Wars", and $6000.00 is the entry level price slated for the "new" Mac Pro. To get the "new" machine even close to the storage capacity you now have with your 5,1...will probably cost another couple grand. Basically, bought 1st hand, the "new" Macs most likely will cost closer to $10k, to have them upgraded to the same degree, by comparison, that guys like us enjoy with our older cheese graters. That said, your 5,1 12 core would have probably ran close to $6k decked out like you have her, when it was brand new. So as bad as I hate to admit it the "new" pricing is somewhat relative here. Now if I was to score a major payday from my music, and I was going to invest in a "new" computer based studio, I might seriously consider a $10k Mac Pro to be the core of my rig, but then again, if I scored some major coin, I might just go the old school route and invest in some serious hardware, including a "big boy" console and Mara maintained MCI 2" 16 track tape deck. I better stop on that note, I'm getting into "kid in a toy store" mode...lol........
  22. First, look at preferences in Logic, and click on audio, then click on general, make sure compensation is set to audio and midi for tracking and set it to all for mixing. Also in Apollo's Console, under the settings tab, click on hardware and set "imput delay compensation" to medium, anytime you're tracking with UA plugins inserted on Console 2 channels, turn it off if you're not using any plugins in the inserts, this will conserve dsp. Lastly, there's the chance that none of the steps above will correct tracks "drifting" out of time, if they were recorded without compensation correctly set prior to being recorded, i.e. those tracks may have been "printed" out of time, in which case all you can do to fix it, is record the out of time tracks over again WITH compensation ON the proper setting in Logic. Hope that helps.
  23. I don't get you. Does it work in "Low Latency Mode" or not ? "Low Latency Mode" is not lowering the latency. You have to press the "Low Latency" button when tracking. Does it work then when recording? If so it's a plugin causing your issue. Dany, I know what "Low Latency Mode" is, what I said was I hadn't tried using or "pressing" the "Low Latency" button. When I referred to lowering the buffering to 32, that's exactly what I did, and the timing/misalignment issue I was having went away, hence I didn't continue trying to fix the problem. I've since found out it is more than likely connected to my Apollo interface and how it processes signals, rather than Logic or any plugins. Thanks for your help though.
  24. Thanks Dany, I never tried it in low latency mode, but I think I got it sorted by lowering my buffering to 32 while tracking, I had it set at 64, trying to get an instance of EX24's B-3 organ to not spike on one core. Yep as soon as I lowered it back to 32, I quit having the issue.....who knows?
