"Plug-in for device “” is missing" notification [SOLVED]

Hi,

 

after one of the daily crashes suddenly this error window appeared. First time with a line of advise "try to avoid", and Logic would refuse to open. Then after the usual repair permissions, trashing prefs and reinstalling Logic this window keeps appearing. I can open Logic and work, but it worries me. I already last a day of work when a song went corrupt three times in a row. Could find no info about it. Anybody here who's got a clue about what plugin is missing and how to fix this?

 

I love the new features, but the stability is hell

Difficult to say for sure based on the info you give...but sounds like it could be related to a control surface plug-in (the ones that allow you to use it with Logic without having to manually configure anything). If not, maybe it's related to a MIDI driver (the ones that are installed in Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers/).

Which appears to be an OS related thing?

Could you please post more of the crash report? Try to include the thread that crashed. Maybe we'll see something more specific there.

Hi, I'll have to wait for a crash to happen (hope I fixed that with all the resetting but we'll see). The notification window is really plain:

A yellow exclamation mark with a small Logic X icon on top of it and the text "plugin for device """ is missing". The message 'try to avoid' I've seen only once, also just plain text in a white field.

 

checked the controller (ipad) and midi devices. Everything works but the fireface800 midi is not showing (not sure it ever did but I do think so)

Ah, well, that didn't take too long. Opened a song, mixer window didn't show anything, clicked in the mixer field (normally the channels would appear) and BOOM

There's nothing in that crash report that would give me a clue of what's happening.

 

However you mention that your Fireface is not available as a MIDI device...strange. Can you tell us what you have inside your MIDI Drivers folder (Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers/)?

 

Also, what do you have in your control surfaces setup window? How many devices?

OK, cool. Try bypassing all control surfaces to see if the dialog window stops popping up (Logic Pro X menu > Control Surfaces > Bypass All Control Surfaces).

Hi, ok, tried that but doesn't make a difference. I also tried removing all au plugins but it still appeared (I deleted the com.apple.audiounit cache)

Then I'm afraid I have no idea what's going on.

Yeah, can't find anything related on the internet. Maybe a messed up permissions thing that disk utility can't fix. Same could be for the crashes. I fear there's no other solution than a clean OS instal but that will cost me a day :-/

Here's another idea to see if we get more info about that dialog window...

 

Open the Console (Applications/Utilities), click the Clear Display button in the tool bar and launch your project. Keep an eye on the Console when the window pops up. With some luck, more info related to it will be shown in the Console's display.

edit: hmmm, can't believe it has something to do with frontier design: there is no aplha track preset in the new controller selector

Try this:

 

Logic Pro X menu > Control Surfaces > Setup... Uncheck "Automatic Installation" in the "New" menu.

 

It's really strange that it's looking for the alpha track if you never had it. If the above doesn't work, I would also try deleting the control surfaces preferences file (com.apple.logic.pro.cs). It's it your user Library/Preferences folder.

I suppose you got this when re-opening the project?

 

One is for a missing audio file...no mystery there.

 

That missing plug-in message again. Do you get this in a new empty project as well?

 

(if you deleted the cs preference file, you may need to uncheck "automatic installation" again. And if you have to disable that option to stop the message from popping up then it means you must have something installed in your system that's triggering this)

Yeah, this missing files is no problem here (though it shouldn't happen). You were right, I had to trash the cs preference file and again uncheck the "automatic installation". I had the first warning screen again before I repeated the routine but no there are no warnings.

 

It could have been the old V-control / Ney-Fi plug I once used before Logic came with it's own ipad controller.

OK, cool...so I guess that means the problem is solved, right?

 

Don't know if you're still getting the crashes...

yeah, I'm in the middle of an album production right now, but as soon as I have the time I think it's time for a fresh OS install. This good ol' Mac has been upgraded through 4 big OS systems so I guess it is the best thing to do. Loads of sorting and backing up to do first though

Update: the other problem, random crash, still here. Think it may be related to a virtual memory issue, possibly a memory leak. Happens often when I've switched between a couple of songs, sometimes when opening, sometimes random like just now. Always the same error, as described before.
