MIDI Channel Strips

I sent a reply last night giving me any details of my set up and a number of screenshots so you might point me in the right direction and setting up a template. I started another reply a few minutes ago but lost the ability to edit what I was dictating losing a little handles and unable to select all‘s in order to save what I’m typing and compose in notes where it’s much easier. Gads! I still can do nothing. I should’ve close the window and re-logged in I guess. Let me do that and I’ll reply again. My apologies, Seth

Godin MultiAc MIDI guitar - Acoustic pickup, lipstick pickup and 13 pin MIDI pickup;

Rolland G I-20 MIDI Interface;

iMac 27” x 2;

LogicPro;

Apogee Quartet.

I suspect they are External MIDI channel strips that are being created, which previously showed up with the track channel strips on the left and dark brown and MIDI button unselected, but now shows up only when selecting MIDI in mixer window. Only use three or four of the six that are showing, and only those three can be selected.

In MIDI-environment I have one instrument with channels one through six selected to pass through in MIDI environment. The other three are single channels for the lower three strings of the guitar for bass assignment, chs 4, 5, 6.

How do you create a track that represents my Godin MIDI guitar so the mixer channel strip shows up as previously, with the non MIDI tracks? That was seven years ago I created such a set up, and will include a screenshot showing this. It took me weeks to create that MIDI environment set up for this, and would hate to throw all that out but I’m suspecting that maybe part of the reason it’s crashing and quitting when I select something from the library.

I’m thinking I might have to start completely over again from scratch. It was not crashing and quitting Once I was somehow able to delete the three bass tracks, but when I select library and try to select an instrument like acoustic guitar for the MIDI guitar at the top, track 1, and bass guitar for three of the channels, which you can see previously were showing with mixer MIDI unselected. With the new project template the 3 MIDI bass tracks shows as MIDI channel strips, of which only three are used and can be selected. Interestingly, track number one is MIDI guitar, but shows with the other channel strips in the mixer with MIDI unselected.

But I am unable to select an instrument for track number 1. I’m not sure how I create it so it shows up in the channel strips in mixer, not among the MIDI channel strips, where are you get a mess of unnecessary channel strips, most of which you can’t even select. I’ll select the screenshots I have and hopefully they’re not too many, but I think you’ll see what I mean from the screenshots.

Best, Seth

I was looking for add attachments for the screenshots; but, only needed to drag and drop here.

Let me know what I should do to get an up and running template. Do I need to completely start over? If so, is it necessary to use the MIDI Environment with all that craziness to deal with? I only need single channels for each MIDI instrument track; but, I notice that I can import my previous setup saved most recently from 2015. I fear I will have another unstable mess on my hands. Not sure how LogicPro handles this now.

You notice that the MIDI Acoustic guitar for track 1, somehow shows up with all the audio and other channel strips on the left, and nothing shows when selecting MIDI in Mixer. However, the three bass MIDI instruments, tracks 2-4, only appear when selecting MIDI view in Mixer, along with a lot of other CS that do nothing, cannot select, nothing. Anyway to remove the unused MIDI CS? I do have MIDI Environment for Ac MIDI Guitar passing through channels 1 - 6, which would account for what is seen in mixer view. Can I just do away with MIDI environment now? I have nothing complicated here, just the Godin MIDI guitar into the Roland GI-20, USB to iMac. The notes display at the top when playing guitar, but not getting any sound. However, the Acoustic MIDI Gtr which shows differently in Mixer view does sound. The 3 tracks for bass assigned to #32 Acoustic Bass does not sound, with Record selected and selecting from the 3 monitor sets, which I use for surround; but, now just selecting a pair from output to get things working.

Not making sense to me. I pray you can assist. I have several Groove3 Videos including QuickStart, but those are very old, and not sure they are updated. Not seeing anything new for LogicPro either for simple stuff creating tracks, and channel strips, where one can select from the library without crashing, which LogicPro simply disappears without a trace. No messages. Immediately quits if a click on the wrong item.

Best, Seth

Do I need to completely start over?

No need to start over.

An easy way to see only what you want is to click the "Tracks" button in the Mixer menu bar, next to the "All" button that is currently highlighted in blue.

Mixer-mode.png.af2d45ed7ec3530a8fe8ab2b952f6382.png

If you still need to be in All mode but don't want to see all 16 channels of each multi-instrument then read on....

You should be able to open your environment (Window > Open MIDI Environment), then click the "Layer" pop-up menu at the top left, and choose the MIDI Instr. layer where you'll find your multi-instruments. Each has 16 channels, you can select a channel and deselect "Assignable" in the Inspector, which should remove the channel strip from your MIxer:

David,

Someone referenced this as I somehow missed it composing my messages the other evening. So glad to see I can get rid of those extra channel strips. But what a crazy way to do it. You would think you could option click on his channel strip and have it deleted or hidden. Hopefully, I can figure this one out and fix up the mixer window.

David,

Incredible. How would anyone ever come up with the idea to clean up your mixer window to go into MIDI environment and accomplish this, something that should be very simple and easy to do and not have to leave the mixer window at all. I thought by now Apple Would have redesigned, or get rid of that midi environment all together, as it’s a pain in the neck.

David,

I tried many times on both iMac’s, unchecking the Assignable Instruments, but did not do anything to change their showing in the Mixer CS’s. Strange that I get 7 MIDI CS’s; and all go as expected through ch 6. Why is there a 7th, when I only allow chs 1 - 6 to pass? The last mystery CS is not ch 7 though, but ch 12, which lit up that CS when selected in MIDI environment as you can see.

Perhaps I am missing a step or, please, something? Here is what I got in these ScreenShots...

Lordy, this is getting crazier as I go. But, thankful for your assistance, just very frustrated.

Best, Seth

I hear you. But is there any reason why you're in All mode? Why not switch to Track mode?

Otherwise if you want, attach the Logic project file here and tell me which channel strip you're trying to hide.

Golly, Thanks David,

Perhaps there’s no reason to be an all mode and not necessary to see all those External Instrument MIDI channels strips? I guess I’m just used to it from the previous versions and seeing everything that’s going on. You just need to see that channel strips that are playing the sounds that theMIDI channel strips are connected to?

Which file exactly should I upload here? I “Save As” and get a bunch of folders, audio folder, freeze folder, so must be the .logicx file, yes? Now, trying to figure how to upload this file. Seems to only accept ScreenShots? Attachments tab, add files, has that file greyed out. I think years ago sent as email attachment, somewhere... Let me look about.

Have tried to add file here via attachments, and to your email address; and, will not accept that file. Sorry, to be such a problem. LogicPro Help Forum that does not allow to upload a LogicPro file? Must be missing where to do this..

Best, Seth

I think my MIDI Environment Setup is not correct; and, I am unable to add a MIDI Instrument to complete my 3rd bass string from the Godin MIDI guitar, as greyed out because “Automatic management of Audio CS is Enabled"? I have looked everywhere for this setting. Cannot find it. This is just nutz!

Keep on trying...

That's for you to find out. Try the Tracks mode and see if you're missing out anything? The Tracks mode has a the big advantage of showing you channel strips only when they have a corresponding track in your Tracks area.

I guess I’m just used to it from the previous versions and seeing everything that’s going on.

Ok although for what it's worth, that behavior has always been the same in all Logic versions, it's not a new behavior.

You just need to see that channel strips that are playing the sounds that theMIDI channel strips are connected to?

Ah yes that makes sense, so you could make tracks for those and see them in Tracks mode, or switch to All mode to see them.

Which file exactly should I upload here?

Only the project file. I have posted detailed instructions there: How to attach files to your post

Without knowing what you're trying to achieve, meaning why you have set up that environment like this, it's hard to tell what you're trying to do thus whether or not your environment is set up correctly or not. It certainly is not the default MIDI Environment so unless you have a specific reason for customizing your MIDI Environment then you shouldn't mess with any of it other than what I suggested earlier to hide unused MIDI Channel Strips.

You can find the automatic management of audio CS in File > Project Settings > Audio :: Channel Strips. That setting should normally be turned on and left alone, unless you know exactly what yo'ure doing. When that setting is turned on, create instrument or audio channel strips by creating tracks in the Tracks area.

I was trying to follow another member here instructions to set up to work with my Godin MIDI guitar. But this is a reconstruction of the MIDI environment I had previously, but it quit allowing me to add instruments to plug my filtered transformers to.

The three instrument channel strips represent one string of the guitar for bass using the fourth, fifth and sixth string and assigned to the corresponding MIDI channels for that external midi instrument, channels four, five and six. That’s why I was trying to hide all the other mid channels strips and only show those that I’m using, channels for, five and six. But I also made, as you see A MIDI guitar to play on all six strings, and all channels one through six. That’s why it shows six Medi channel strips, the seventh I don’t know why that’s there. You can see their names for channels four, five and six, but that seventh midi channel strip is assigned to channel 12 for some reason.

I should’ve thought and remembered that I did have to compress the file before sending it or uploading here and logic pro help. It’s been a while, and I do apologize for taking up so much of your time. But I sure do appreciate your efforts here. You’re a good man.

Seth or Zephar

That way I can assign that instrument after recording the meeting out to whatever instrument I want and do whatever corrections I need in the piano roll.

Somehow Screenshots of my old MIDI environment is located above, and this is from my old 2011 iMac with an older version of logic pro. This is what I’m trying to re-create on my newer iMac Big Sur logic pro 10.6, and unsuccessful so far What I have is what you see previous screenshot posts.

Let me compress that logic file and upload that now.

This is what I have been able to do on my new iMac logic pro 10.6, and can see it is quite different from my 2011 running an older version of logic pro, lbut this is a working template. You can see the three external MIDI instruments using channels four, five, and six, and another one using channels 1–6, which I can record notes, then reassign to whatever instrument for a project. I can play keyboard which would be so much easier, but not that well. You can imagine what it was like in the beginning with the early MIDI guitars that were very expensive and didn’t work Worth a darn.

The click and port set up is nice and neat and goes directly to the sequence or input, which the newer logic pro will not let me do without making all sorts of other cable connections. I think this is where my problem is located. If you can fix this, and hiding that extra MIDI channel strips would be a bonus, but just a working template would be a great blessing.

So then were you able to hide the channel strips as desired in the end?

•••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••

No, unassigning did not change the mix view at all. I see you doing it and it comes and goes, but I select, deselect, it remains

– • - – • - – • -

I sent the zip file of the template project file, and hopefully it contains the MIDI environment, and perhaps you can fix the clicking and port layer, and The MIDI instrument layer also. This is where my problems are located, I believe. Not able to select from the library on the left where you can search, it’s just not going to work this version I guess. There’s a problem somewhere but I cannot find it. I’ve done everything possible, stripping my Big Sur iMac to only Apple startup items and apps. And now reinstalling those that I use a lot since it did not change anything.

I completely started over from scratch and just disconnected my Apogee interface and everything else. And in MIDI environment I can now unassign and MIDI channel strips disappear. I think you’re correct, that somehow I transferred some old settings, as there was an option to transfer a MIDI setup Into MIDI environment, and I think that changed everything to a nonworking project.

Had to leave, but will check sound library to see if that works now.

However, in mini instrument layer I need to create the three mini instruments for bass guitar, and then another four playing all six strings. I know how to do this but you said best not to mess with that setting unless I knew what I was doing. I guess I can try and see what happens.

Someone here created that midi layer and MIDI environment, named Doc. But I re-created it on my own following the steps that he laid out, so I knew how to do it, at least in the previous version I worked with, as everything worked perfectly as I wished. Suddenly everything started working, surprise, and didn’t have to mess with it for five years. Then stranded in the Dominican most of last year, and surgery before that, so two years of updates totally disabled my set up. Not usually how Apple works, as most always can update smoothly without losing hard work. They even took out EXS24 sampler, I don’t understand this. It was an older version and a long time ago, but it’s coming back to me. I think I can disable that one setting so I can create instruments in the MIDI layer; however, in the set up I had, didn’t have those little squares with the 16 channels. Creating midi instruments in that layer I’ll be able to set up one instrument to play one string on one midi channel, and do it for the three lower strings. Then a fourth instrument to play all six strings on either one channel or 6 channels. Any reason to do one or the other you can think of?

I know how to click on the instrument that’s below the CS and assign to a fixed channel, but I think I will use channels one, two, and three. For some reason only CS 5–16 will disappear, if I use four, five and six, channels one, two, three will not disappear. However, if I assign the bass strings to channel 1, two and three, and all the strings to channel 4, channels 5–16 will disappear. Strange.

I think I’m making progress.

There is a setting when selecting a CS for selecting off, and three different IAC settings and Rolland GI-20 MIDI Interface, which will create another box of 16. How should I set this as I can select off, or three different IAC selections numbered 1–3, and finally The Rolland GI-20 MIDI Interface is a fourth selection, so it must be coming from the audio/midi setup app?

OK, I think I might have it right... ScreenShots of what I created from ZERO, then the 4 MIDI Instruments, and their assignments to CS's in MIDI Environs.

What do you think? I will re-enable "Automatic Management..."

However, just tried to select Sound Library, but, instantly quit. Wonder what is wrong? This time created completely from Scratch, all NEW.

Found it interesting saving a template. Saw your post on how to do... Just save and do not change anything. Then why all the choices like you can? Ja ja ja!!!

Update: October 12, 2021

•••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••

David: “So then were you able to hide the channel strips as desired in the end?”

•••••••••••••••••••• ••••••••••••••••••••

Yes, finally able to hide CS’s in MIDI View. Quit everything, disconnected everything and started with a fresh new project completely empty using the Mac’s input/output in audio preferences. Then added 4 external MIDI instruments for my 4 Godin MIDI guitar Inputs, then four software instruments.

You need a software instrument to assign to each external miniMIDI device, yes?

Not sure.. do you mean it crashes when you open the Library on the left?

Not sure which post, or what changes or choices you mean you're seeing exactly?

Yes, finally able to hide CS’s in MIDI View.

Ok great! I am marking this topic as solved then. Feel free to start new topics if you have new questions so we keep things organized, thanks!

No, not necessarily, do you mean so that you can bring back the audio of the instruments? Let's start a new topic for that too.
