Hidden Meaning
Hi all, I am fairly new to using midi and associated equipment. I have recently purchased Logic Studio and have a Kurzweil Ensemble Grande Piano EG20. In addition, I recently purchased a cheap midi interface. Upon using the interface, I have found that it has worked fine except for when I play two or more notes within a software instrument track simultaneously. Logic will continue to play the notes even after I release the keys. Also, I have tried different kinds of software instruments with the same result for each. The only two ways that I have found to stop the notes is to either press play in logic or press the keys of the playing notes separately again to deactivate the sound. Another issue is that for some reason the pedal to my keyboard will also play the last played note when pressed. I have checked my keyboard's settings and did not find an obvious issue with the settings. So, the question is how can I determine for certain if it is my keyboard or my midi/usb interface that is causing the problem? Is there some sort of program that I can use on my mac to determine this? Jordi Torres
If Logic's MIDI Activity monitor doesn't help, try the monitor in the environment's Click and Ports layer...or get MIDI Monitor to see what's going on. Would help if you mentioned which cheap MIDI interface you're using. Also, what pedal are you talking about? Sustain pedal? J.
Hidden Meaning
Yeah, I am talking about the sustain pedal and the midi interface is titled on amazon as a USB MIDI Cable Converter PC to Music Keyboard. I have no other information about this interface and it does appear to have a user manual. I will try what you have suggested now. Hidden Meaning
I looked at the midi activity monitor and logic seems to be receiving the midi signals from the keyboard correctly. For example, when I play a C major chord, logic received the signals, but note off did not seem to be sent when keys were released. I have also looked at Midi Monitor. The note on and off signals work properly for playing individual notes, but the note on persists even after release for chords. Note off does not seem to activate like it should. Also, I tried the sustain pedal and Midi Monitor shows it activating the note on signal for the last played note. Releasing the pedal activates the note off signal for that note. Anyways, I am not sure that there is any fix for this problem, but it looks like my keyboard is probably messed up. Thanks jordito for the information. It really helped. Jordi Torres
Hmm...try doing a "hard reset"?: Turn off the EG20. Hold down any of the 5 buttons to the left of the LCD in the user programming section, and while holding one of those down, turn on the EG20. J. Hidden Meaning
Nope, unfortunately the hard reset did not fix the issue. Thanks once again.
Jordi Torres
Well, that's really the cheapest "MIDI to USB converter" (MIDI interface) I've ever seen. I'd be more suspicious of it than the Kurzweill. J.
Hidden Meaning
I suppose I'll try the midi interface with a friend's keyboard or something to see if the same problem arises.
Jordi Torres
I suppose I'll try the midi interface with a friend's keyboard or something to see if the same problem arises. That's always a good idea, but did you see this review at Amazaon? J.
Hidden Meaning
I had seen that review some time ago during my research before I bought the cable and had completely forgotten about it. The truth is that I was hoping I would get lucky with this cable. Also, I have only used my keyboard to play classical music over the years and have never used its midi capabilities before until now so I was uncertain of its functionality in that area. Well, that sounds like my issue, but all the same I have learned a lot. Thanks for your help
Jordi Torres
Thanks for your help You're welcome! There are other similar interfaces ("cables") which should be of better quality and that only cost 4 or 5 times more than the one you have. Look for known brands. Still, I would try testing it with another keyboard just to see what happens..and just because you never used your keyboard's MIDI capabilities doesn't mean they're going to brake...or get "rusty" or something Cheers, J.
