richgilb
I've got 11 drum tracks and the drums need a bit of help in terms of timing. I have tried moving just the kick drum track to learn that it messes up the other tracks a bit. Is there a way of turning flex on all 11 tracks, linking them, then dragging the kick and have the other 10 tracks move with it?
David Nahmani
Yes, you can group your tracks. In the Mixer, select all desired channel strip, click the group slot (empty gray rectangle above the pan knob) and choose a group. From the same group slot go to the group settings and make sure "Editing (Selection)" and "Phase-Locked Audio".
richgilb
thanks and would it be wiser to reference the room mic as opposed to the kick mic, do you think?
David Nahmani
In most situations I would use the kick mic as the reference if it works, and try something else if the kick doesn't work.
mattyp
I would add that when quantizing grouped audio, you can reference the quantizing off of only specified tracks (ie, Kick or snare,) by selecting/deselecting the green 'Q' square in the arrange track. So for example, you want to quantize to 1/4 notes, but the tom hits are confusing logic and messing up the quantization: Group your channels, phase-locked, and deselect the green 'Q' icon, on all tracks but the kick, then quantize. It will use the kick as reference to quantize, and keep all tracks in sync with that. Then make your flex changes from there.
richgilb
thanks...and finally, it won't matter if i use the kick take that i have already dragged in time manually? it will be able to ignore my changes and align as it chooses? mattyp
No. It's best to start over. It won't ignore your changes.
richgilb
So do i start over by dragging the wav out of finder into the project or can you press a button that instructs the project to ignore the flex changes I made?
camillo jr
You can delete all the Flex markers at once in a region by selecting the region then Control-clicking for the Delete All Flex Markers command. You may have to do a Select All first before you'll see that command in the menu.
richgilb
Ok, done it It's really screwed the rolls up though.
camillo jr
Shouldn't do that if they weren't screwed up in the first place. After deleting the Flex Markers, are you seeing any green or orange areas in the region?
richgilb
Sorry Camillo JR I meant I just did my first quantize. I have not removed any flex markers. So if I remove them where the rolls are I should get a better result?
camillo jr
Ok, you're still using a workflow that's bound to cause that kind of problem. What's been recommended is pretty much this: 1) Start from scratch with the Flex Markers, IOW, delete any you've got, otherwise they *will* get in the way of future quantizing efforts. 2) Group all the tracks together so that they'll all move together when you do the next step..... 3) Once you've got rid of your old Flex Markers, now try quantizing by referencing only the kick. Rolls, being the clattery beasts that they are, are almost guaranteed to get pulled out of shape after quantizing. Half the notes in the roll will get pulled one way, the other half the other way. But if you only quantize some simple and fundamental rhythmic element like the kick, then all the rolls and busy tom fills will follow along, if you follow mattyp's advice a few posts back. mattyp
Also, you can cut a section out (for example, the rolls) and quantize those regions differently that the rest of the tracks. Great for sections like that, even try turning the quantizing off and fix it by hand.
